The final interview Shockwave had at Vans Warped tour was with Sam Boxold, the singer of Trophy Wives, and Mike Crawley, the drummer of Trophy Wives.
Shockwave: How’s Warped Tour going?
SAM BOXOLD: Awesome! This is actually our first day on the tour. We were lucky enough to play Mansfield back in Massachusetts, but this is our first official date on the tour. We’re gonna be playing the Ernie Ball stage for another eight more days. I’m stoked about it.
MIKE CRAWLEY: So far it’s been great. Other than the rain this morning and it being humid as all heck, we had a pretty good crowd this morning.
That’s good! Is there anything you don’t like about warped tour?
SB: It’s a lot of work, but don’t complain about it, because it’s a privilege to be here.
MC: It is a lot of work. From sun up to sun down, you just keep going, going, going.
Didn’t you guys recently release an EP?
SB: We didn’t just release one; our latest release for an EP was One Way Trip to Mars. That actually had a different singer on it and a different guitarist as well. But I guess that’s what we’re working with right now.
MC: Yeah, we’re trying to get Sam and the new guitarist Tyler, and pretty much the new version of Trophy Wives out there. Like the single “Threshold” and our release of a Bruno Mars cover.
SB: That’s the newer stuff.
MC: That’s on the new stuff.
Where did the name Trophy Wives come from?
MC: Okay, so we gotta credit our old singer, Pat. He’s a big fan of Everybody Loves Raymond. I’ll tell you right now, it’s not an exciting story. It was some little joke that happened in an episode, and she asked, “Am I some kind of trophy wife?” and I guess he said, “What contest in hell did I win?” and he thought it was the most hysterical thing.
SB: Yeah, Pat struck gold, he was like “That’s amazing!” and he brought it to Chris and said “We should call our band Trophy Wives!”
MC: We had nothing else, so we were like “Yeah, okay!”
Hey, it’s better than being named after the show itself.
MC and SB: Yeah, exactly!
What are your future plans?
SB: Well, we’re gonna be touring a lot. This next year is gonna be filled with touring, writing music, and some secret stuff that’s extremely exciting for us that we can’t really share right now.
MC: Can’t disclose. Sorry, I know you want to hear it. We’re working with a super secret, very big name, and we hope to have a lot of things out there for our fans.
SB: We’re working very hard, and we hope to see a lot of people, and make a lot of new fans over the next year, so that’s what we’re doing.
Awesome! Do you guys know if you’re gonna come back to Maryland?
MC: Oh, yeah!
SB: We’re actually on our way back after Warped is done. For us, we’re gonna come back here for a show with Carousal Kings on the 28th.
How did the band start? What’s different about it?
MC: Oh gosh.
SB: I guess that would start all the way back to when Mike and our other singer, Chris — they were in a band together way long ago back in high school. So, those two have that connection there. I was in a different band. I met Chris about four years ago now.
MC: Travis, we ended up stealing from…actually Travis and Tyler, were in a band before as well. We kind of joined up and Travis brought over Tyler. When we were looking for a new singer, we transitioned from Pat for someone new. We couldn’t find anybody more fitting than Sam.
SB: Sorry it’s so complicated!
MC: It’s a very odd web.
SB: That’s how we got together!
What’s one thing that you’re most proud of?
SB: I’m proud of Tuesday; our date at Massachusetts was incredible. There were so many people in the crowd that were just enthused to see us. That meant a lot to me, it was the biggest crowd I’ve ever played in front of, so that’s my milestone so far.
MC: I’d have to say, just, I’m proud of how much the guys have come together, and we’ve had so much fun out here on Warped Tour.
SB: I’m proud of how much fun we’ve had!
MC: Yeah! It’s like a dream come true.
SB: We’ve actually gotten comments from other bands that we’ve toured with, that we smile too much.
There’s never such thing as smiling too much.
MC: They’re touchy about it, haha.
Nothing wrong with being happy. Well thank you guys both for the interview.
Sam and Mike: You’re welcome, we appreciate it!
