Texas, the largest of the 48 contiguous states, the biggest skies you will ever see, the coldest beer you will ever drink, and the loudest, fastest, hottest music you can find. The state boasts more large cities within a half day’s drive than any other. So, the possibility of finding what you like is pretty easy.
That is why, when I heard about the UFO/Saxon 2017 Spring Tour starting off in my home state, I jumped at the chance to visit. Through the power of Shockwave’s editor in chief and publisher, Robin Ervolina, we secured access to the first three dates. Houston, Dallas, and San Antonio- my home town and epicenter of metal music. In addition to the show access, I would be interviewing Biff Byford of Saxon and Rob De Luca from UFO
I arrived in San Antonio from Baltimore, and was greeted by better weather. Looking forward to the tour, I prepared for it with an excitement that I haven’t felt in quite some time.
UFO is my favorite band from the 1970’s and 80’s, but I had never seen, Saxon. Yes, believe it or not, I had not witnessed the best of what England had to offer. True, I had seen the legendary Motorhead, as well as, Nektar, British Lions, and other, but not Biff and the boys.
The trip to Houston was smooth, so I cranked up the music while watching the Texas countryside speed by my window. Wide open spaces and small towns passed until we got to the outskirts of Houston. The venue, The Scout Bar, is located in a non-descript strip mall South of town. But, what is inside is truly a wonderland of Rock’n’Roll.
I met my friend, Sue, and she let me know the particulars of the night. The venue opened up and I retrieved my photo pass. Walking around the bar, getting the lay of the land, I met with the other photographers.
Stay tuned, my friends, for the next installment of Tommy’s Shockwave Road Trip ’17.
