Just like this country, music can be a huge melting pot of influences. No matter where the parts come from or how diverse they are, something pretty amazing always seems to come out of it. Well for one band out of Michigan, that seems to be just the case. Hell, even their name is as complex as they are.
“Metal is a huge blanket term; you know what I mean? Most of it I think is crap honestly.”
THE BLACK DAHLIA MURDER has had a pretty amazing ride so far. Not only did they help propel a Death Metal scene in their own state, but one for their country as well. Have others come before them? Yes, but that is not the point. This is about what this band has done to keep it going forward without expected boundaries. This isn’t about whether they are metal enough in a particular sub-genre; this is about their efforts to just make great music in any genre.
“People are so tied to genres…”
Vocalist Trevor Strnad and crew released their 8th full length album Nightbringers last month, and it might have hit a stride for the band that had not been achieved before. Yes, every band tries to outdo their last release, to keep pushing the envelope so to speak. This latest offering seems to be an example of the stars aligning more than ever before. With the unbridled success of their life so far with label Metal Blade Records, the band seems to be churning out an inspiring connection of hard work, an enthusiastic passion, open mindedness, and some luck thrown in for good measure.
Earlier this month, I had the chance to sit down to talk with Trevor before his set at the killer 3rd floor venue at the Hard Rock Cafe on the Las Vegas Strip. Take a listen to our chat about metal out there, people’s associations with a particular genre, and what people should take from his band. Remember, not one person should bogart all the candy in life, regardless of how much they feel threatened!
