‘The Hit Men’s keyboardist/percussionist/vocalist, Russ Velazquez, continues band’s “Stories from the Road” video series with a story about meeting the late, great David Bowie at the ST. James Theater in NYC, in 1982.
The Hit Men to knock off one hit after another on forthcoming tour in a sizzling show that features songs from the numerous legendary artists that they’ve performed and/or recorded with over the years.
Since the members of The Hit Men (www.thehitmenlive.com) have performed with, or recorded with, numerous legendary artists over the years, they, of course, have some great stories to tell.
In what marks the third video in their “Stories from the Road” series, The Hit Men’s Russ Velazquez (vocalist/keyboardist/percussionist) reflects upon the day he met David Bowie at the St. James Theatre in New York City and got a few choice words of “modern love” in 1982:
Bowie was simply in a class all by himself!
Born and raised in the Bronx, Russ is an award-winning and Emmy-nominated composer, singer, arranger and producer for TV, radio and film. A “first call” session singer and guitarist for over thirty years, he has performed with some of music’s best including Sting, Carole King, Luther Vandross, Patti Austin, Lisa Fischer, the Ramones and others.
The first “Stories from the Road” was a tribute from The Hit Men’s Jimmy Ryan to his friend Jim Croce on what would’ve marked the singer’s 74th birthday (January 10, 2017):
The second was a humorous tale from The Hit Men’s Lee Shapiro about how he came to Frankie Valli’s rescue during a show at Radio City Music Hall in 1978:
Those who have attended a show by The Hit Men know that it’s these kinds of great stories they tell during their shows, along with performing well known hit after hit after hit.
With so many great stories to tell and songs to sing, it’s easy to see why The Hit Men are a favorite among audiences across America.
The Hit Men – currently comprised of keyboardist and group founder Lee Shapiro, lead guitarist/vocalist Jimmy Ryan, vocalist/keyboardist/percussionist Russ Velazquez, bassist/vocalist Jeff Ganz and drummer/vocalist Steve Murphy – have, individually, appeared on over 85 albums, been awarded numerous gold and platinum albums, and have received Emmy nominations, Telly awards, Clio awards and more.
A group of amazing performers, superb musicians, superior vocalists, great arrangers and creative composers, The Hit Men are hit makers of the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s — including performing and recording members of superstar acts like Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons, Tommy James and the Shondells, The Critters, and band-mates who played and performed with Jim Croce, Cat Stevens, Carly Simon, Elton John, Paul McCartney, Cheap Trick and more.
Enjoy the music. Enjoy their stories. Enjoy the show.
