It’s an exciting time for THE HERO DIES FIRST as they’ve just released their first ever music video! “The Beast Inside” is the debut single from their upcoming EP Enemy At The Gate, due to be released October 13th. This UK five piece have been hitting the local scene with some force. From heavy breakdowns to playful riffs along with bursts of throat-ripping vocals to melodic choruses, these guys have been creating their own twist on modern day metal.
Over just one weekend, the guys took over a local venue to shoot the scenes for the new video. THDF are no strangers to this local music hub; the Castle Tavern in Luton has seen many mosh pit frenzied sets from this Bedfordshire quinary. In the final afternoon of filming, they were joined by friends and fans who helped create the crowd scenes for their storyline. I myself was one of the lucky ones who joined in on the action. It was a fun packed afternoon for all involved and was the perfect opportunity to help support a fantastic local band.
I got to speak with the band a little about their new EP and the exciting new video!
Shockwave: Tell us a little about the new EP. What is it about? Where did the idea come from?
THDF: The overarching theme of the EP though is just the things sent to test us: from inner struggles over self-control and sorrow, all the way to video-games. We like to keep it varied. All five songs on Enemy at the Gate tell different stories. The lyrics for most hero songs run a personal narrative alongside something from Geek-culture and media. Some of them are obvious, and some are a little more subtle. We usually let our audience figure out what comes from where.
So this was the first ever music video for THDF! How did it go?
Incredibly well. We had a load of our friends down and took over one of our favorite venues for the day. You can’t ask for much more than that.
Who came up with the idea for the video?
We had a last minute change of location for the shoot and thankfully our very good friends at the Castle Tavern in Luton were able to bail us out with next to no notice. In the space of one very frantic afternoon, Mikey pieced together a new story and a shot by shot breakdown of how he envisioned it to create a new spin on the lyrics.
Who shot the video?
Oli Duncanson, who is an absolute genius. Beyond being able to take our treatment and translate it to screen, he fleshed out the idea, shot it beautifully and edited it with perfect pacing. We’re big fans of his and are incredibly grateful for the work he’s done. He had the first draft back to us within 24 hours. The man’s a machine.
What’s next for THDF?
We’ll be announcing a huge run of shows that takes us well into 2018, playing some places we’ve never been before, and eventually heading to Europe!
