Anette Olzon returns with her new band and new project called The Dark Element. Their self titled release comes out on November 10th on Frontiers Records everywhere. Don’t remember her? Well, she was the replacement for Tarja Turunen in Nightwish back in 2007 and then suddenly dismissed from them in late 2012 after recording two albums with them. She then put out a solo album, Shine, in 2014. Now, she has returned with a new and exciting band. The album is co-written and produced by Jani Liimatainen(ex-Sonata Arctica, who he co-founded). Liimatainen also is the guitarist in this band and jumped at the chance to work with Olzon when the opportunity arose. The first track, “The Dark Element” start things off with crunchy guitars and melodic keyboards to go along with Olzon’s angelic voice, which turns dark, pun intended, to go along with the music. This song along is setting the bar extremely high it’s so good and it’s only song one. “My Sweet Mystery” was next and more of what I expected is unleashed on this track. Olzon harmonizing and singing incredibly well with the music. Warning: If you want melodic heaviness, you will have more than your fill on this album. After listening to this album no less than ten times, I couldn’t just pick one favorite either. “The Ghost and the Reaper” will emphatically make you a fan in a heartbeat it’s so good. Liimatainen and Olzon have outdone themselves and like I said with the first song, set the bar extremely high with this masterpiece. Ballad you say? “Heaven of Your Heart” should satisfy your hunger for this. Olzon sounds just incredible on this song with keyboards and piano only. I do hope this is a single. “Halo” is a song I had to hit repeat on again and again as this song just grew on me instantaneously with it’s fierceness for keys and guitars.
The Dark Element is a monster of an album and will immediately make a huge impact in the metal world and yes, bands should be worried.
