Music fans always fear when a band stays out of sight, they are forgotten or the band has broken up. This is not the case Stereoside fans. Because the boys are back and they are Hell bent! Their new album Hellbent is the band’s first release in over six years. The band from sunny Ocala, Fl. formed in 1998 and later released three albums. Their first being Wake Up in 2005 with original singer Eddie Sweeney who would later be replaced by current and long standing vocalist Jeff Shields. The second album So Long in 2007 put them in the game with the release of singles, “Sinner,” “So Long,” and “On Our Way.” Their last release was the self-titled album Stereoside in 2010 which hit number 48 on Billboard’s Heat seeker album chart that same year. The self-titled album gave us songs like “Black Sheep,” “Trailer Park Scum,” and “Amazing.”
Diehard fans ask, “What took you so long?” Well, after 12 years of writing and touring, Stereoside members took a much needed break from the grueling pace of being rock stars, and maybe tap into and showcase their own individual creativity that Stereoside never afforded them. During the hiatus, vocalist Jeff shields teamed up with some old friends and formed his side project, the band Stone Glory. Stone Glory released a 14 track self-titled album in 2013. Drummer, Chris York rejoined his old band Killing Addiction in which he was the active drummer from 1992 – 1994 then 2013 – present day. In the years since their last Stereoside performance, guitarist Ben Foster and bassist David Oliver have been like all musicians, actively creating new music and living the gig we call life.
Even though, some people consider them hard rock post grunge, real Stereoside fans would agree that they are definitely hard rock. I think Jeff has a soulful voice with a hard rock punch. I also think that he and Ben are electrifying on guitars. A prime example is “On Our Way” which you can find on Youtube. The song is a dedication to the many legends that influenced them. Ben is phenomenal and his use of a slide on the acoustic guitar gives it a southern rock edge. They have been a slot in my CD player for several years now.
The first release off the new album Hellbent is the single “Apple Pie.” It is signature work that shows us that they have not been wasting time and they have no problem picking up where they left off. The song is everything I expect from a fan’s perspective. They have also released a lyric video with the single that can be found on Social Media and Youtube. The album has a scheduled release date of August 26th but can be pre-ordered via their website. I have already ordered Hellbent to add to my own personal Stereoside library. Currently, there are no listings for scheduled tour dates. Rest assured that Shockwave Magazine will bring you any and all information as we receive it. I know this album is going to be great and I will be seeing you at a Stereoside show before you know it.
Stereoside Members are:
