Just when I thought Michigan had hit their limit of great bands, these guys came on my radar. State of Mine are from Laingsburg, Michigan, pretty much right smack dab in the middle of the state. They are a metal band consisting of Steven Jodway on vocals, Corey Smith on bass, Mike Martin on drums, Matt Martin on rhythm guitar, and Shawn Willett on lead guitar.
State of Mine originally formed in 2010 on the local scene and scored support gigs for big acts like Black Label Society, Adelita’s Way, Saliva, Otherwise, Soil and many more. The guys released a self titled debut in 2014 produced by BJ Perry at Wall of Sound Studio in Memphis, Michigan. Perry has produced for I Prevail, UFC, Ink Master, NFL, and NCAA. They performed the EP for a year before going back into the studio with Perry to work on a new sound geared toward radio listeners.
The new EP, Devil in Disguise, is scheduled for a September 15 release with 2 tracks available for immediate download. On a mission to tour and perform nationally, they are certainly moving in the right direction with this EP.
The first track, “Curtain Call,” comes with heavy yet melodic vocals leading into a verse with hard hitting drums and bass. This takes us into a chorus with Jodway belting out about the devil in disguise, giving way to the EP’s moniker.
Another track to be noted is “Rise.” A sucker for a good pop cover, I was skeptical at first. But after listening to just the first minute or so, I was already loving this haunting rendition of Katy Perry’s song. The lyrics almost seem more fitting for a metal band. Complete with vocal harmonies and a large range, this is definitely a crowd pleaser.
Don’t worry, head bangers and moshers, there’s plenty for you as well. The track “Stones” comes in with pounding drums and bass asking you to move. I can already see the pits forming in a live show with this one.
State of Mine’s upcoming release offers something for all rock and metal fans to enjoy. In the same family as bands like Gemini Syndrome, Shaman’s Harvest, and Of Mice & Men, I can say it’s pretty awesome. Set a reminder for yourself on September 15 to get up and buy Devil In Disguise by State of Mine. You won’t regret it!
