Speak the Truth…Even If Your Voice Shakes (STTEIYVS) – Not just a cool band name, but a statement. I would like to take a moment to applaud these guys for giving so much thought to something that could have been just another innocuous project title. This name alone invokes a feeling of wisdom and inspiration, actually causing me to take a moment and contemplate what this kind of statement could mean in my everyday life.
So, who are these guys? Why should you care? STTEIYVS is a new band, comprised of members from both Finch and Senses Fail. However, this project is so much more than the sum of those two parts and offers up an album that somehow invokes a sense of nostalgia, without sounding familiar or safe. Their debut album, Everyone You Love Will Slip Away From You is ten tracks of alt-rock goodness I’m not entirely sure I will be able to get enough of anytime soon.
The moment “The Upside Down” starts to crackle inside your earholes, it’s already too late; you’re hooked. Being the first song on the album, they waste no time getting you invested. STTEIYVS lures you in with a catchy lead, and convinces you to stay with its feel-good chorus (you’ll be singing along by the second time it hits). Side note – if lead guitar hooks are your thing, you will not be disappointed. Make sure to tune in to “Mornings Mournings” and “Carpenter In Prison,” and you can thank me later.
I’m not going to lie, I was not immediately sure why I loved the midway point of this album as much as I do. The titular track of the album, “Everyone You Love Will Slip Away From You” burrowed deep into my psyche without my awareness, until I sat down to write this review. Now, I need to share a little tidbit about me for this to make any sort of sense.
As anyone close to me will tell you, I am an absolute sucker for “ohs” and “whoas” in my music. I don’t have a fun story or good reason why I am broken this badly, but you’re just going to have to accept it and trust that I know what’s best.
A lightbulb went off listening to this song again and it dawned on me (yes, I had a bit of an internal fangirl scream at this realization) that there are “ohs” layered throughout this whole song, and the end result is so much more than I could have ever hoped for, had someone told me this before now. There is a haunting set of them in each verse, and then a similar but “lighter” cadence of them at the tail end of each chorus. Friends, I cannot tell you just how happy this has made my heart. It’s my favorite thing.
Everyone You Love Will Slip Away From You drops on November 10th and is available for pre-order now!
