Discovering this show was a prime example of “right place, right time” (by place I mean my Facebook feed, and by time, I mean my lunch break). It was the best (and only) surprise show I’ve been to. It couldn’t have been better.
Sleeping With Sirens announced their Gossip Tour earlier this month in preparation for their new album of the same name, but snuck just three “Pop Up Shows” in for fans to clamber to. That is of course if they happened to notice in time. I saw the first one of these was in my home town (Grand Rapids) the day of the show and let out what others in the office have since described as a “terrifying shriek.” The concert that ensued was one of the best shows I’ve attended in recent memory. Sirens put on a pure, unfettered rock show.
No special effects, just the band, the house lights, and their instruments; you could tell this is where it was at for them. This was why they played music and it was magic.
Friends, they killed it. A week later, I still have their discography on repeat. It was that good.
They launched into their set with the fan favorite “Kick Me” and the crowd lost their minds. From there it was a whirlwind down memory lane as they played tracks off almost every one of their albums, all the way back to “If I’m James Dean, You’re Audrey Hepburn” from their 2010 debut With Ears to See and Eyes To Hear.
My favorite moment though, came when they started the song “The Strays,” off 2015’s Madness. Everyone knew this song. I mean, everyone. The entire crowd was singing along, and there was this sway to the whole room, where I knew everyone was as lost in that moment as I was.
It was a fairytale.
Sirens, please come back soon. I promise to answer the call.
