Powerful. The word I use to describe current hard rock band, Skillet. For the last decade Skillet has been popping in and out of hard rock fans’ ear drums, bringing their message with force. Skillet’s upcoming release Unleashed is no exception.
Cranking up the heavy, their songs convey emotion not solely through words, but through the feeling. Before singing a word, Skillet hooks you with the first chord, and manages to do so with each song on Unleashed. “Feel Invincible,” the first single off the record, calls together the audience through a repetitive chant, appealing to the desire to stand up and be strong in the face of a scary world.
That same message rings throughout the rest of the album, including the adrenaline-inducing “Back from the Dead.” “Light It up/Light It Up/Now I’m Burning/Feel The Rush/Feel The Rush of Adrenaline/We Are Young/We Are Strong/We Will Rise/Cause I’m Back/Back/Back From the Dead Tonight.” Another line mentions zombies coming out at night, suggesting you face your own fears and fight back.
Skillet slows it down with songs like “Stars” and “Watching For Comets,” reminding you who they believe is really at your back. It’s reminiscent of their Christian roots, appealing to the Christian Rock audience with gusto, and yet not excluding fans who don’t relate to that genre.
“I Want to Live” throws it back to the likes of “Comatose,” weaving in a perfect symphony of orchestration and guitar. The blend of John Cooper’s and Jen Ledger’s voices is an intense high, a beautiful melody appealing to all rock lovers.
Skillet turns up the intensity with “Out of Hell” which appealed the most to this heavy metal fan. It starts off with a heavy guitar riff (so unlike Skillet’s sound I began to question who I was listening to) and then explodes into strong vocals with a catchy refrain I was singing along to before I even knew the words.
Whether it’s the sweet ballad of “Watching For Comets” or the call to stand together with your comrades in “Saviors of the World” Skillet has created a well rounded album to appeal to every individual in today’s controversial world. Take up your stance and fight alongside them by checking out their album when it’s released on 8/5/2016. In the meantime, check out the link to their new video for “Feel Invincible.” You’re welcome.
