Shakra are not new comers to the metal scene like some may think. In fact they are very well established and releasing their 11th studio album on November 24, 2017. Shakra have been around since 1997 and toured with some big names in the music industry including HammerFall and Stratovarius. Snakes and Ladders looks to carry them right back to where they left off two years ago when they released High Noon.
Right out the gate, “Cassandra’s Curse” just rocks from the first guitar riff to the last drum beat. The song lyrically is relevant as it speaks to the world affairs of today. This is probably one of my favorite tracks. Mark Fox’s vocals on “Cassandra’s Curse” just really draws you in and is a preview of what is to come as you continue to listen. The title track “Snakes and Ladders” in my opinion has some of the best guitar work on the whole album and Thomas Muster and Thom Blunier shred like no other. Their dual axe attack reminds me a lot of some of the early Y&T masterpieces. Another favorite of mine is “Something you don’t Understand.” Again, the vocals of Fox are amazing on this track and that combined with the guitar work of Muster and Blunier make it a classic. The album continues on song by song and just rocks. “Fire in my Veins” is another that I just love the six string work on.
Overall I have to say I was very impressed with Shakra Snakes and Ladders. These guys might not be a household name in the United States but they deserve to be. Snakes and Ladders is a very solid from start to finish. If you are looking for a Christmas present for the metal head in your family, this is the gift that keeps on giving. If you are that metal head looking for a reason to not have to listen to holiday music, definitely pick up Shakra’s Snakes and Ladders. Besides, you deserve an early Christmas gift. You have earned it. Shakra’s Snakes and Ladders is available November 24, 2017 via AFM Records.
