The Pop Punk world is now welcoming a new name, SHADED. Indeed, this UK based quartet is releasing their new EP The Better Man In Me September 1st, 2017. Time to look at what’s hidden inside it.
The cover shows the earth exploding everywhere, and sitting atop it are two people, apparently lovers or close friends. We can understand that the theme would be about the ups and downs of relationships. At the first front to back listen, you feel some nostalgic vibes but also catchy melodies, guitar riffs, and drum beats, characteristic of that style but contrasted with more sweet sounding vocals. This sums up exactly the general subject of the record.
The EP starts with “Better With You.” This is for me the most pop-influenced song. You can hear in the instrumentals many synthetic sounds, especially during the bridge and the intro. Lyrically, “Better With You” sings of the balances between being in love and being shattered. “I’m not strong enough to keep on losing my mind / I know I’ll still be better with you.” Matt East’s voice sounds like he’s remembering some good past moments.
The 4th track, “Here’s To Start Again,” caught my attention. It’s introduced by heavy and dark guitar riffs, definitely the most aggressive song of the six. The lyrics are very powerful and the general sound is one of strength and motivation to go through something difficult. However, it’s not the hateful song you can imagine at the first seconds. As the title shows, it’s about starting somewhere again, forgetting the bad times as life goes on, so keep being positive. That’s why this song sounds very refreshing ! It also features Miles Kent giving the bridge a different tone.
These two songs are for me the highlights of the record, but all of them have their own identity, especially “Too Far Distant.” That is the emotional slow song of the CD offering a break from the huge general energy.
The quality of Better Man In Me is in the fact that instrumentally or vocally, SHADED has really been able to recreate the mood of the lyrics to make it sound like words are meant to sound.
