If you have read my reviews in the past, you know that I am a power metal nut. So when I got the opportunity to review Serious Black’s new album Magic, I jumped right on it.
For those of you that don’t know much about Serious Black, let me tell you a bit about them. Serious Black is what I would consider a “supergroup” of sorts with members from Helloween, Blind Guardian and Tad Morose. Serious Black was formed by Mario Lockhert and Roland Grapow in 2013. They have gone through a couple of lineup changes in the last four years and have released two studio albums in that time. In their infancy they toured with the likes of HammerFall and Gamma Ray. So clearly these guys have a great power metal resume.
I am gonna tell you right up front that if you like power metal you are going to like this album. It is straightforward guitar driven power metal starting with the first song “Binary Magic.” This track has that galloping guitar riff that just gets you going. The next tune is one of my favorites, “Burn Witches Burn.” It has that same galloping guitar riff, which paired with the amazing vocals of Urban Breed, makes “Burn Witches Burn” destined to be a classic. Another of my favorites is “Lone Gunman Rule.” This track has a nice mixture of great guitar riffs and keyboards, not to mention a great guitar solo. A couple other tracks that I really enjoyed were “Black Magic” and “The Witch of Caldwell Town.” The final track on the album is interesting and is appropriately titled “One Final Song.” It is a mini musical. It has violin and piano and a classical musical sound to it. I really thought this was a clever way to close out the album.
Serious Black has made a great album with Magic. It has the amazing vocals you expect from a power metal album along with a heavy melodic sound. If you enjoy the sound and theatrics of power metal this is a must have in your catalog. Serious Black’s Magic will be released on August 25, 2017 via AFM Records.
