Richie Kotzen has taken a bit of a break following the extremely successful tour with The Winery Dogs in support of their second album Hot Streak.
I have heard Kotzen say he must live life to be able to write music. Judging by his latest album, Salting Earth, life has been good. If the lyrics are any indication, this time off has been filled with happiness and love.
Even knowing how talented Richie is, I was quite surprised when I learned he was the only performer on this record; with the exception of the beautiful and talented Julia Lage adding back-up vocals to “Make it Easy.”
Let’s think about that for a second. Kotzen wrote the music, played the guitar, the bass, the drums, (along with anything else) and did all the vocals.
According to the press release for the album, Kotzen said it was not intentional, it just happened out of a long-standing habit:
“It’s really not deliberate when the record is finished and suddenly I’m the only performer on it,” Kotzen admits. “It actually comes out of my process of writing and documenting my ideas. It started back in the late ’80s when I had a makeshift studio in my parents’ barn. I grew up fairly isolated, and I soon realized to get this music out of my head and onto a format where I could listen to it, I’d have to figure out how to do it alone.”
Salting Earth gives Kotzen fans everything they have come to expect from his solo albums. The record is filled with the jazz/bluesy/rock fusion we love and has become synonymous with Richie’s music. That tone of his signature Telecaster and the gritty sensual nature of his voice, lets you know exactly who you are listening to from start to finish. Strap in, turn up the volume, and get lost in the world Richie shares through his music.
An international tour supporting the album begins April 21, 2017 at the Canyon Club in Agoura Hills, CA. I’ve got my tickets to this show. Be sure to check out Richie’s Official Site for a full list of dates and pick up tickets to a show near you.
Salting Earth is the 21st solo release from Kotzen and will be available April 14, 2017 via his own label, Headroom-Inc.
