Italian symphonic metal band Rhapsody of Fire are at it again, literally. They have re-recorded some of their classic hits from the 1997-2002 era and the result is the album Legendary Years. A 75-minute collection of classic songs completely re-recorded. Rhapsody of Fire has undergone some lineup changes over the years and with the addition of vocalist Giacomo Voli and drummer Manu Lotter it seemed time to make some of the classics more modern.
Legendary Years starts the attack with classic hit “Dawn of Victory,” from the album Dawn of Victory originally released in 2000. If you are not familiar with Rhapsody of Fire this song’s symphonic sound is what makes the band popular. It combines screaming guitar and vocals with keyboards and a choir as backing the vocals. Track two is “Knightrider of Doom” originally from the album Power of the Dragonflame. This song is another fast-paced song with guitar and keyboards leading the way. Track three is probably one of my favorites on the album. It is the classic “Flames of Revenge,” originally recorded for the album Legendary Tales. This was the first Rhapsody of Fire album released in 1997. This song highlights Voli’s vocal skills perfectly. The song also showcases an awesome keyboard solo. There are so many tracks that I am so happy to hear a modern spin on including “Emerald Sword,” “When Demons Awake,” Riding the Winds of Eternity,” and “Dark Tower of Abyss.”
Fans of Rhapsody of Fire should love this album. Some Rhapsody of Fire purists may have a tough time getting into this album at first because it is not Fabio Lione on vocals, but they will soon realize that Voli’s vocals are very complimentary of all the songs original forms.
If you are wondering if Rhapsody of Fire is a band that you would like to become acquainted with then check out this album. You will love it. Once you hear the modern spin on these songs you will be compelled to go discover the originals and you will not be disappointed. Legendary Years is available now via AFM Records.
