New Jersey’s Red Hymns’ eponymous three-song EP comes on strong, making an immediate impression with appealing melodies and full bodied arrangements. Vocalist Jeremy Hernandez (former Near Miss and Bigwig) has an infectious set of pipes and a strong delivery. This is one of those support bands today / headliners tomorrow (after stealing the spotlight from those they’re tapped to support). They could easily dominate a festival stage, drawing listeners away from beer and pizza, pulling them from the merch tents to the field. Their alt rock sound is haunting, effervescent, and ethereal, combining some hints of 80s alt rock (think New Order with a hint of Sonic Youth) and solid modern rock and metal rhythms and beats. Some bands put out mini EPs to test their sound, but Red Hymns is clearly radio ready. If you heard them here first, you know it won’t be the last.
