Halloween came a few months early to Salt Lake City, Utah as Raven Black rolled into town on their Hex O’ clock tour Friday night August 11, 2017 at Club X. They brought with them their band of misfits including “The Doctor” on guitar, “Stitches” on bass, “Muppet” on Drums and, “Raven” of course on lead vocals.
The show opened with Salt Lake City locals Sugar Bone and Dezecration. As good as they were the intensity grew as the crowd waited for who they were here to see. The house lights went dim and the smoke machines started to pour out smoke that mixed with the green, red and blue stage lights, which were followed by a short eerie introduction. Raven Black then appeared and broke into their song “Spider” still cloaked in darkness. As the stage lights began to increase the crowd was able to get a good look at the band. Raven had a black and white striped umbrella as she walked around on stage and she was wearing a short black dress with her hair in pigtails. Her face makeup was white with black stitches painted on her face. Stitches on bass was wearing a mask covering the lower half of his face with the rest covered in white makeup. The Doctor’s face was painted white with a black cross on his forehead. Muppet sitting behind his drum kit was almost invisible except for his arms pounding the skins through each song.
About half way through their set, Raven announced to the crowd that she was really sick but said she was going to give it her all anyway and she did. Raven appeared on stage with a new prop as Raven Black tore through each song. At one-point she even appeared on stage with a hula-hoop. I have never thought of a hula-hoop as a creepy toy but for some reason Raven Black had a way of turning innocent toys into horrifying playthings. During another song Raven appeared on stage with a giant stuffed bear, and it was at this point I realized this was more than a concert it was a show. The night ended with them playing “Seven Sins from their Seven Sins album.
Even with Raven being ill, the intensity of the show did not suffer. She battled through and gave the crowd one hell of a show. The crowd and myself were not disappointed, as the show was very entertaining. At the beginning of the night I was a casual fan of Raven Black, by the end of the show I became a true follower.
