Northern Invasion is a killer festival in its own right, rolling out the hottest names in rock for three years running. As part of The World’s Loudest Month, Northern Invasion brings the Danny Wimmer Presents celebration to Somerset, WI May 13th and 14th of this year. Co-Executive Producer Gary Spivack took a few precious moments out of his INSANE schedule to talk with Shockwave Magazine about Northern Invasion and the massive undertaking DWP undergoes to produce one of the greatest festivals of the summer.
Shockwave Magazine: Thank you for taking time to answer some questions about Northern Invasion! I’m sure you’re busy getting everything in order to run smoothly. For those that have no idea what the inner workings of such a massive festival look like, what can you tell us about the history of Northern Invasion and the staffing it takes to produce a festival of this magnitude?
Gary Spivack: It takes a village…a massive team to put on a weekend rock ‘n’ roll destination music festival the size of Northern Invasion. I mean, we literally build a city for a long weekend. And the venue at Somerset is incredible. We love the area and of course all the great rock fans in the great white north. Northern Invasion is a major part of our “World’s Loudest Month” campaign, where we have music festivals every weekend from the last weekend in April through Memorial Day weekend/end of May. Northern Invasion is a key part of that. The World’s Loudest Month also includes Welcome To Rockville, Fort Rock, Carolina Rebellion, Rocklahoma, River City Rockfest, and of course the sold out 2017 Rock On The Range in Columbus, Ohio.
The lineup for Northern Invasion has everyone excited! From Soundgarden, Godsmack and Papa Roach down to the smaller, yet very popular up and comers like Starset and I Prevail. How do you set your sights on the big acts, and how are the smaller acts chosen for the opportunity to present at Northern Invasion?
We are all about providing tonnage. Bulk, bulk and more bulk. The biggest bang for the smallest buck possible to have something for every rock fan. From headliners such as Soundgarden and Godsmack to cred metal acts such as Amon Amarth, Gojira and Opeth to, like you say, the best of emerging bands such as Starset, Bleeker, Every Time I Die, Nothing More and…more! We want that rock fan from the left all the way to the right to have no excuses. We want all of them to be there with us May 13/14 for the 3rd annual Northern Invasion.
This is the 3rd year for Northern Invasion. Any changes or new features we can expect?
We feel the lineup is more stacked from top to bottom than ever. Three stages, firing up all day and all night. We have improved the camping sites, the VIP experience and the overall secondary entertainment as well. Each year we look to raise our own bar and give the rock fan the most for the ticket they have purchased. We never rest.
In many of the festivals, community plays a large role in features from food to beverages. How does Northern Invasion tie into the community of Somerset, WI?
We look at each festival we produce with a new set of eyes. What can work at Carolina Rebellion doesn’t mean we duplicate it at Northern Invasion. We have, we honestly feel, the best concession company (Soho) in the festival game. Hands down, they grab the best local/regional food-beverage and make sure it’s unique to the area. Northern Invasion’s secondary entertainment will be special to the area. We hate doing the same ole same ole. We know the ones buying the tickets appreciate that as well.
Is the lineup finalized, or can we expect any later editions?
We truly care about the local community, and each year at Northern Invasion, we keep a slot open for a local band or two. We run a yearly promotion with the great rock station 93X in Minneapolis, where the grand prize winning band gets to play the Invasion. Aside from that, yes the lineup is full, stacked and ready to roll.
Is there anything you’d like to add to close out the interview? I know tickets are still available and selling fast!
We want Northern Invasion to stand apart from any and all other music festivals no matter the genre of music. If you are thinking about attending Northern Invasion, whether for just one day or if it’s for the whole weekend, you will not be disappointed. We hope to see everyone at the Invasion come May 13-14 this year!
And on that note, Dear Readers, here’s your ticket purchase link.
