Waking Tera is one of those bands that you tell your friends about…repeatedly. I know this because I was told over and over I needed to see them but never had the opportunity. This month, the stars aligned and Waking Tera were opening for Avatar, giving me a chance to fulfill that demand. I’m glad I did.
Since Waking Tera formed in 2010, their fan base has grown and as a band, they’ve have proven that they can hang with the big dogs, opening for bands such as Hed(Pe), Devour the Day, and Trapt. After label issues and a few lineup changes, the band is set to release their LP, Jonah Complex.
Self describing their music as heavy and melodic, they have a mix of rough and clean vocals that creates a progressive sound. Their clean sound lulls you into a false sense of security, and the next thing you know you are lying on the floor after being throat punched by the rough vocals. It’s a great mix, works well for them, and will propel them forward. You need to keep them on your radar. I am going to pass on the demand…GO SEE WAKING TERA!
The guys were gracious enough to speak to me before the show. Give it a listen as we discuss the trials of tribulations of album production, practicing in a storage unit, and bands they want to tour with.
