Lost on the Road to Eternity is the latest release from British legends Magnum. If there is a road to eternity Magnum is defiantly farther down it than most of us. Magnum has been rocking the UK and the rest of the world since 1972. Lost on the Road to Eternity will be the band’s 20th studio album and mark the 40th year anniversary of their debut release Kingdom of Madness. Unfortunately Magnum has not had as much commercial success in America as they have in their home of England and the rest of the world. If you have not heard Magnum’s catalog by all means check it out. Magnum is fronted by Bob Catley, whos voice is as colorful as the artwork on their albums, which is the first thing that always draws me into a Magnum album. Lost on the Road to Eternity’s cover art is no exception. Imaginative renditions of the characters from the Wizard of Oz and Alice in Wonderland mixed with a grim reaper and witches fill the album’s cover and play on one’s curiosity of what lies inside.
From the first song “Peaches and Cream” to the last “King of the World” Lost on the Road to Eternity is a classic example of why Magnum has stayed relevant for all these years. One of my favorite songs is the title track “Lost on the Road to Eternity.” Enlisted to sing vocals with Catley is Tobias Sammet, founder and frontman of Edguy and Avantasia. Catley has a long history with Sammet and it was nice to see him return the favor. The track begins with grand orchestral opening that transitions into guitar mixed with piano. Catley and Sammet trade vocals throughout the song making it a timeless Magnum classic.
Fans of Magnum or ’s work probably already have Lost on the Road to Eternity pre-ordered. For those of you that may not know Magnum or are on the fence, this album has that classic rock sound you are looking for with a timeless voice at the up front. Lost on the Road to Eternity by Magnum will be released on January 19, 2018 via Steamhammer / SPV.
