Imagine setting sail on a Viking ship off to conquer and discover the world. The smell of wet leather and the musty sea permeate your nasal senses. Then out of nowhere you hear the deep echo of the battle horn. It is time to show the world why the Vikings are the most feared warriors of the north. One little twist to the story, you have an mp3 player. Yeah that’s right an mp3 player. What would be the soundtrack of the battle? I can tell you right now it would be Leaves’ Eyes new release Sign of the Dragonhead.
2018 is starting off with some serious Viking Symphonic Metal. Leaves’ Eyes are no strangers to telling stories of the past in their albums. Throughout their history they have told stories of Norse mythology and history. Sign of the Dragonhead is different though. Original vocalist Liv Kristine parted ways with the band and was replaced by Elina Siirala. That being said the album still has that symphonic sound that the band is known.
Sign of the Dragonhead starts with title track “Sign of the Dragonhead.” The song is the soundtrack to the Viking adventure. It includes a Viking war horn as well as an amazing guitar solo. That paired with Siirala’s vocals make it one of my favorites on the album. “Across the Sea” is up next and is another one of my favorites. It has an adventurous sound to it that makes me think of ships setting sail to a new world. Another of my favorite songs on the album is “Riders on The Wind.” Bagpipes combined with a choir singing “Riders on the Wind” make this an anthem for the ages. It has a fast pace with Slade sound to it. It is a fun song that I found myself singing along as I listened.
As I listened to Sign of the Dragonhead I found myself transported back to the time of Vikings, which was really fun. Siirala’s vocals are amazing on this album. The instrumentation on the album gives it a fun sound that listeners will enjoy. If you are a fan of Symphonic Metal you will want to start 2018 off right by transporting yourself back in time and picking up Leaves’ Eyes Sign of the Dragonhead which is to be released by AFM Records on January 12, 2018.
