So I go into this review a little nervous, because, come on, how can anyone do a review on Kix’s live show, and truly do it justice? So, I’m going to come at this from a personal perspective. I want you to feel like you were there, and see what I saw ,like you were right beside me, because this isn’t just any review of any band, this is my memories of history being made. So, I will start from the beginning. My colleague Tom and I, arrived at Rams Head Live in Baltimore, Md a little early to meet up with the general manager Madelyn, for an interview with Kix, before the show. We were greeted and ushered back stage to wait, (yes, I said backstage, with Kix, I know I still pinch myself). Madelyn was gracious, funny and such an awesome host. She instructed us on what the schedule was looking like due to everything being held up, due to the horrific 50 car pile up on 95 earlier in the day. So we waited back stage while they got prepared, and Kix did their sound check. Madelyn let us in on a little secret while we waited, Kix was going to be receiving a surprise award for reaching the #1 SPOT ON THIS WEEK’S BILLBOARD TOP MUSIC VIDEO SALES CHART for CAN’T STOP THE SHOW: THE RETURN OF KIX – A DOCUMENTARY, the band’s first ever number one, and highest chart position in their 35 year history. And Shockwave Magazine got the opportunity to be the first publication to photograph this historic moment. Pinching myself again, OUCH, yes, this was really happening.
Soon we all moved to a room more private, to sit down with Brian Forsythe and Mark Schenker, for a little two on two interview. Praying silently, I didn’t flake out or go total fan girl on them, Brian and Mark made us feel totally relaxed with their humor and wit, we talked about Rock Your Face Off, why they decided to make a new album and more. With time being a factor and the house getting packed with people, it was time to conclude the interview and start the party. Supporting Kix that night was a band called So Low, I may have never heard of them, but the crowd sure seemed to get the memo. Like I said earlier, it was like a party, with great music, dancing and singing, drinking and eating, and I had never seen anything like it. There were young people, old people, husbands with wives that even brought their children along, all having the time of their lives for one night out of the mundanities of everyday life. I’ve seen packed houses before and have seen sold out shows, but never, have I seen every level of Rams Head Live, overflowing with fans. Every corner, each level balcony, was brimming with people. I knew I was in for something special.
Kix strolled out on stage with a stride only legendary kings of rock can earn. Because they know, they are about to strip the walls bare and rock the damn house. With their retro velour blazers to their leather bell bottom pants, space and time shifted, and we were propelled back in time. “Can’t Stop The Show” was the first song they sang off their new album Rock Your Face Off, and they couldn’t have picked a better song to kick the show off with. Whether it be five years, 10 or 20, they have proved that they still have that magic and time hasn’t changed that. Steve Whiteman’s (vocalist) voice live, sounded as fresh and new as it did two decades ago. How these guys remain unchanged is a mystery to me, but hey I’m not gonna complain and neither are the millions around the world who agree. Kix wasn’t just putting on a show, they were entertaining, funny and genuine. They weren’t just giving us a performance, they were celebrating with us. With energy and charisma, kick ass lyrics and songs that thread itself into your soul, until it’s a part of you. This band is as real as rock and roll gets.
Standing side stage, watching one of the greatest bands alive, play all my favorite songs ever recorded by them, was one of the greatest moments of my life thus far. Also, being there to see Madelyn Scarpulla, their general manager walk out on stage to present to them a Billboard Award for hitting the number one spot on this week’s BILLBOARD TOP MUSIC VIDEO SALES CHART with CAN’T STOP THE SHOW: THE RETURN OF KIX – A DOCUMENTARY, the bands ever first number one, and highest chart position in their 35 year history, was just so damn cool. Just when I thought all the stops have been pulled and there couldn’t be any more surprises, a couple got engaged on stage. This guy asked this woman to marry him on stage in front of Steve Whiteman and the whole audience below. I thought that was the sweetest, coolest thing. Of course, I got teary eyed, he just asked her to marry him. I had to track them down to find out their names and get their incredible story. They are Suzan Kelly and Al Balcerak of Whitehall,Md, and they have known each other for over 30 years, but have been dating for a little over three. Back in 1989 they were supposed to go to a Kix show together in Timonium, Md, but Al stood Suzan up. It’s always been a joke between them every time they see Kix. So, Al decided to right his wrong from 30 years ago and propose to Suzan at the Kixmas show. Kixmas was a celebration, of life, love and music that never dies. Who needs Christmas carols and presents under the tree, when Kix comes to your town to Rock Your Face Off. If anyone reading this, was there that night, you feel me when I say, this was an unforgettable night. If you weren’t there, I hope I did my best to bring you as close to being there as possible.
Christmas had come early this year, to Rams Head Live. But it wasn’t just any kind of Christmas, It was a Kixmas kind of Christmas.
T’was the night of the Kix show, when all through Rams Head Live
All creatures were stirring, that doors would open on time
The garland was hung, from the balconies with care
In hopes that Kix soon would be there
Fans were nestled, all snug from wall to wall
While Kix did their warmups right down the hall
And Steve in red peek-a-boo pants, and Ronnie in his purple cap
Are about to waken the world from their music deprived nap
When out in the crowd, there arose such a chatter
I arose from my seat to see what was the matter
Away to side stage I flew in a flash, looked around and almost got whiplash
The lights were a glow, like bright falling snow
Kix came out singing, “Can’t Stop The Show”
When what to my wondering eyes should appear
A crowd holding up rock horns and cups of beer
There were no Fa-la-la-la-la’s or songs like jingle bells
But there was beers all around, and boob flashing girls
Singing some of their greatest songs, and newest hits
Kixmas came to Rams Head Live, and killed that shit
