Karabas Barabas’ album Return of the Sexy Demon is the comeback of chill-lax.
The steady tapping of “In Waves” to the deep beating from “Casino Tears,” is harmonizing groove. Karabas Barabas is the good kind of oddity. It sits on the edge of interesting, balancing above sing-a-long playfulness.
Return of the Sexy Demon is a novella of tracks with charisma and creativity. “Barbara and the Boys” is a character play on personalities with a story-time aesthetic.
With track titles as clever as the peddling guitar work, Karabas Barabas is fun. “Being a Man” showcases vocal talents with a build of instrumentals, all dropping to a bouncing, faux-heavy chorus.
“Sexy Guy” is where goofiness takes the spotlight. Reflecting to the dance-floor, this track is a blast. Nothing is too serious in Karabas Barabas music, which might just be what the world needs.
Put down the phone, turn up the stereo, and get ridiculous. Be weird with “Brighton Beach” and “Zebra in Heat.” Wear yourself out and jump away your common anxieties, then chill out to the nonsensical sounds of “Ode of the Disenchanted Cottage.”
Karabas Barabas, I love you in your unique joy. Thank you for reminding me to play.
