With aspirations as high as the moon, it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to understand why Turncoat is breaking through the atmosphere at high speeds with their new music. The boys are making moves to bring their immensely lyrical new EP to your angsty ears and bleeding souls. Now touring this summer, they sat down with our Guest Contributor J. Ann Gaffney to give us a little insight into their world. “We’re just a bunch of normal dudes” says a not so normal band that jolts you awake and brings home an inspirational note we all know too well somewhere in our rebel hearts. Conforming is something this band definitely won’t be doing.
Who exactly is Turncoat? Has Turncoat always been your name?
Turncoat is a Michigan based hardcore band consisting of members Keith Keister (guitar) Nick Steadman (bass) Austin Cornette (drums) and Jim Ash (vocals).
Turncoat has always been our name. We have never been know by anything other than that. Or dem boiz.
Who thought of it and does it come with an interesting backstory?
It was kind of just something that got tossed around when we were in the early stages of forming the band. The name kind of struck us once we said it out loud and resonated with us on so many levels. Doing things our own way and going against the grain back home.
Social media says the band came from Michigan, so how did you meet? Did you grow up together?
Jim and Nick both grew up in Michigan and have been friends for a while. Myself (Keith) and Austin both are from Panama City, Florida and had been friends for years. Once I moved to Michigan 4 years ago I met Nick and clicked instantly. We added Jim into the mix and it took off from there. Countless drummer issues led me to hit up Austin again because I knew he was as solid as they come and wants this just as bad as we do. The dream team.
Craziest thing you’ve done to get your music heard?
Talk about crazy… let’s talk about how crazy it is to be heard or even seen on Facebook. You have to pay all this money to have people WHO ALREADY LIKE YOUR PAGE see what you post. That’s crazy. Bring back Myspace. Facebook is killing individual artist.
The Spoiled Tranquility Tour kicked off 5/16/16! Will you be writing and recording new music in addition to touring this summer?
We have been in the process of writing at least three new songs. But we are so particular about everything so we take time and time and time to write and re write. Really just focused on getting this EP out and touring on it as hard as we can.
What would be your dream venue to play a sold out show at?
Doesn’t everyone wanna play a sold out show at Madison Square Garden? That or we wanna be the first band ever to play on the moon. It’ll happen…watch.
What kind of response do you typically get from fans after a show?
Mostly after we play kids come up to us and are very excited and one big thing we hear a lot is how different we are than most of the bands they come and see. It feels good to have such a good response. We really appreciate everyone that comes up to us and says hi or has kind words about our music.
Will this tour be different from others you’ve done? If so, how?
Well this tour is taking us to some places on the east coast we have never been to. We have been in the south a lot but the east coast has been a blast. We’re happy to see so many new places and new faces.
What is the message you’re trying to send with your music?
We want to keep it real and tell it how it is. For people to hear what we have to say and take notice in their own lives. That your not a slave to what mommy and daddy want you to be. What society what’s you to be.
Is there anything specific in your life that directly inspired or influenced your new self-titled album?
It’s more or less a correlation of many events that transpired in all of our lives. There’s so many different inspirations it’s hard to narrow it down. But I think people can hear it in the music.
Was there a moment you collectively knew that you would all dedicate your life to your passion for music?
We have all been in bands for years. This is the band we came together and said this was it. This is the one we will take as far as we can go and sacrifice everything to get out there and be heard. Music has always been my number one passion. Same goes for everyone in this band.
Why did you chose “Growing Up” to be the first single to represent the new EP?
It kind of wasn’t even a choice hahah. It was the very first song we ever released and toured on forever. It just kind of happened. One of our stronger songs so it works out well.
What has been with most excited part of being signed with Eulogy Recordings?
It’s awesome to be releasing our first EP through a label I grew up fan boying over. A lot of our fave bands came from this label and really made a start there. It’s truly an honor.
So, I’ve searched social media to the point of creepy and I still can’t seem to learn enough about you. Anything you want to share with the readers about yourselves and what your here for?
We’re just a bunch of normal dudes. Keith tattoos full time at Vivid Art Tattoos in Monroe, Michigan.
Jimmy is a full time meat-head, part time Tri County Chinese checkers champion.
Austin is a pwee boy and a slam enthusiasts. He’s pretty cool and all.
Nick is a Star Wars junkie and a video game master.
We’re all pretty normal guys just having fun doing what we do!
