There isn’t a soul alive that hasn’t heard the name Anthrax. I’m not talking about the deadly white powder used as a weapon of bio-terrorism either. I’m talking about one of the Big Four, award-winning, headline grabbing, 35 years of thrash metal making, icons and innovators known as Anthrax. Formed in 1981 by the first original member and still present [rhythm guitarist] Scott Ian, Anthrax was born; later bringing in the one and only [vocalist] Joey Belladonna, [guitarist] Frank Bello, [drummer] Charlie Benante, all in the early 80’s and most recently in 2013, adding [lead guitarist] Jonathan Donais.
Hitting their stride in the mid to late 80’s, these metal gods would go on to become one of the most recognized and idolized bands in the world. Cranking out 11 studio albums, six live albums, appearances on tv sitcoms, the first metal band to have a song played on the planet Mars courtesy of NASA, even developing their own batch of bourbon, Anthrax’s list of achievements go on. Generation after generation music evolves, and genre-blends become the norm, but the thrash metal/heavy metal community could always count on Anthrax being exactly who they’ve always been, willing to give us the best of who they are on stage, and in song.
On January 25,2018 Anthrax embarked on a second Killthrax Tour co-headlining with Killswitch Engage with Havoc to support, where they will take turns opening and ending the show. 2017’s Killthrax Tour was such a success they decided to do it again this year ending the tour on March 4, 2018 in Portland, ME. I was given the opportunity to chat with drummer Charlie Benante a few days before they were heading out, to discuss Killthrax 2018 and their upcoming new long anticipated live in-concert DVD “Kings Among Scotland,” arriving in stores and online on April 27, 2018.
P.S. Don’t forget to preorder “Kings Among Scotland.
