“Stuck In Your Head” becomes the new national “Fuck you” anthem that you’re going to want to play over and over again. Released on Sirius XM Octane, I Prevail smacks you with another song that takes your breath away.
It opens like an old school radio tune, crackly and distant. They turn it up and then hit you with full volume, which made me sit back in my seat and smile because they just kicked my ass at the very start of the song. The guitar hook drew me in like a bread crumb trail and Brian Burkheiser’s seductive hushed voice lured me into the gingerbread house.
They bust into the chorus with so much energy, I found myself bouncing in my desk chair. The lyrics are so relatable they become easy to remember, because it makes you want to apply them to every ex that played games with you. “Guess What/For the record you’re the broken one/Tried to sing along but we got stuck/So we turn it over and over again” stuck with me and reminded me of a relationship where we kept hitting the same rut no matter what we tried to fix it.
I Prevail keeps the tone upbeat through the whole song, despite its lyrics suggesting that a relationship has gone bad. The soaring guitar riffs and beat of the skins become a war cry after shots have been fired. For either party involved in the mess of the relationship, it’s a big middle finger in the face. They slow it down two minutes into the song; Brian’s voice once again, briefly, becomes a soft timbre that feels like taking a breath between screams. Suddenly, you hear Eric Vanlerberghe rip into his sultry scream. His normally prevalent voice is muffled in “Stuck In Your Head” compared to their other songs, which is a shame because I consider his scream one of the best attributes I Prevail has going for them.
Whether or not you prefer their heavier stuff, with more Eric Vanlerberghe in your ears, I think I Prevail has nailed it with this completely relatable song. This song is like the Lay’s slogan “Bet you can’t have just one.” I bet you can’t listen to this song just once. Try it, I dare you.
