“Well we just say we’re a Rock “n” Roll band. We have a lot of different influences we kind of wear on our sleeves. I think all that put together equals Rock “n” Roll.”
I couldn’t agree more with that answer. After a few member changes, five studio albums and two EP’s spanning back to the late 90’s, He Is Legend’s music composition, lyrics and vocals invoke something inside that’s hard to pin down. You fall in love, want to punch someone or just wanna sit alone in a dark room with the volume cranked up to hell-yeah-high, and feel every inch of the song. Check out the rest of the interview below with drummer Matty Williams of He is Legend.
Shockwave Magazine: Hey, what’s up? This is Tiffany from Shockwave Magazine, and I have Matt from He Is Legend here. How’s it going Matt?
Matt Williams (Drummer): It’s good, I’m good.
It’s a real honor to meet you man, so tell me how long has He Is Legend been a band.
Well, it goes back further than our name. Me and the singer and one of the guitar players started playing in high school when we were like 17, so we’ve been together like 17 years in different incarnations. The main group has been the same for almost two decades.
Can you tell me about your latest album release, Few?
Well it’s awesome, and it was a lot of fun to do. We’ve been recording our last few albums in North Carolina and this time we rented a cabin out in the woods to seclude ourselves from cell phone service and all that kind of stuff. The process and recording was really laid back and fun. And before, the record prior to that was a little more moody, this time we decided to be a little more aggressive on this record. To try to bring back some of the old things we had done, be a little more heavy, raw rock kind of stuff.
A cabin, wow pretty cool.
Yeah, that’s where we stayed whenever we would track in the studio. We would drive 15 minutes up into the country and stay in the woods.
Did you get on each others nerves up there?
No, we are pretty good with not doing that over the years. You learn how to delegate any kind of frustration you have out sparingly, so you don’t blow up one day at each other.
So what do you guys have going on after this?
We are doing a couple more of these festivals. Rock Allegiance in New Jersey, Aftershock in Sacramento. We’re touring out to Sacramento and back and then we’re doing a tour with GWAR in November & December and then Shiprocked in January.
So how would you describe He Is Legend’s sound for those who haven’t heard of you?
Well we just say we’re a Rock “n” Roll band, we have a lot of different influences that we kind of wear on our sleeves. I think all of that put together equals Rock “n” Roll.
Cool, Cool man. Ok well thank you so much for chatting a bit with me, I know you guys were pretty swamped here for press slots. I really appreciate your time.
Yeah, Yeah no problem.
