LISTEN & SHARE: The Harmonica Lewinskies – “Smile Today“
“Who knows, maybe we’ll see a tour with the Harmonica Lewinskies supporting Green Day soon!”
–Diffuser.fm“it’s all you’d expect from a funk group with the tagline ‘funny name, serious music… will get you shuffling and itching for the party, even while thinking about how much fun it is to be domestic.”

The Harmonica Lewinskies announce the forthcoming release of their last album, #BringBackBush, due out Summer 2017. The NYC-based band “mixes elements of punk, big band, americana, and blues” (Surviving the Golden Age) and Billie Joe Armstrong looks really good wearing their merch. Included in A.V. Club‘s “year in band names,” the name often catches fans first, and Pure Grain Audio says, “The band name may be intriguing, but the band is a serious performing powerhouse worthy of all the attention they can possibly receive.” Previously an octet, the band is now a sextet and the upcoming LP will be the band’s fifth and final release.
The reason for the disbanding is because the Lewinskies – the family – is missing a core member: Dan McLane, who passed away on April 28th 2016. They were 90 percent done with #BringBackBush when he unexpectedly departed this dimension. The Lewinskies had been working on the music for over two and a half years, and made sure to complete it without losing the joie de vivre and cheekiness. The album, although cathartic to release as part of the healing process, still has the same fun, outgoing, slightly horny, politically incorrect, reckless energy.
“Smile Today,” the first single from the LP, was McLane’s song. Lewinsky drummer, Oliver Fetter, has the song title tattooed on him in McLane’s handwriting, as reminder and homage. Commenting on the new album, Fetter says, “I’d like to remain positive and playful, with a good sense of humor in addressing the truth of the past, while living in the present. We’re excited about future parties and celebrations, jokes, gags, giggles, acid trips, bong rips, celebratory sips, dancing hips, cocoa nips…”
Last night, the band performed live at The Knitting Factory for a celebratory show dedicated to Dan McLane’s everlasting legacy. Future performances will be announced shortly.

Originally formed in New York City in 2010, The Harmonica Lewinskies are a full on tour-de-force two-step through a rhythm and blues, rock ‘n roll, funktastic experience. Over their seven years in existence, they have accrued several LP’s and EP’s, as well as performed in bar gigs, shows, weddings, bar mitzvahs, PBA Union Galas, Quinceaneras, Graduation Parties, and a smattering of nude beach tiki bar happy hours. The Harmonica Lewinksies are: Rob Bettega (Guitar), Zebedee Row (Bass and Guitar), Ollie Fetter (Drums), Jake Warren (Tenor Sax), Chris Lucca (Trumpet), Marco Sanchez (Bass, Trombone), and Maddie Gioia (Alto Sax).
This leaderless gaggle of misfits has had many members throughout the years. Most notably, Will Simpson and Dan Mclane. Will recently had moved on to combine his passion for pirates and fondness for farming at Black Mountain Farm in Sweden, Maine. Dan, who was a core member, songwriter, guitarist, and friend, passed away on April 28th, 2016. As the band reeled from the experience of losing Dan, the cathartic act of finishing #BringBackBush drew them together and reminded them to spread the love, joy, and the rock ‘n roll spirit that Dan was most known for. What emerged was #BringBackBush, a full-length record that deserved every moment the band gave it. From that record, they introduce Dan McLane’s very own “Smile Today”, which is precisely the result of every interaction with him.
Oliver Ignatius, who’s responsible for all The Harmonica Lewinksies’ recorded material, has lovingly produced, recorded, mixed and mastered ”#BringBackBush” at Mama Coco’s Funky Kitchen over the past two and a half years. The Harmonica Lewinskies are looking forward to continuing to write, perform, and develop their sound after the release of #BringBackBush.
