Ghost, the Swedish six-piece band has been the centerpiece of drama as of late with a court battle between former members and vocalist Papa Emeritus III (Tobias Forge), but that has not stopped the current lineup and signature voice of Tobias from rocking stages left and right!
Ghost is currently on the Book of Souls tour as support for Iron Maiden, and with some time to spare, they brought their brilliant show to New Haven, CT at College Street Music Hall. The newly renovated theater has become the go-to venue in the area and has the newest technology in sound and lighting. This was the perfect choice for Ghost to do their one-off stop. Speaking to some fans, I learned of them traveling quite far to see the Devil Worshipping “nameless ghouls” and the “satanic pope”.
Rocking the stage up first was Astronoid, a five-piece thrash metal band from Boston, MA, was semi-local and had the crowd moving before Ghost took the stage. They kicked ass while playing hits from their newest record Air and certainly brought their rhythmic riffs and psychedelic and unusual lyricism. They kept the crowd moving and interested, and brought what was needed as an opener for Ghost with their lightshow and energetic set.
Ghost took the stage and absolutely destroyed with their mysterious madness. Playing nothing but their hits over the last 11 years of epic pop metal, they kicked off the night with “Square Hammer”, kept the energy up for “From the Pinnacle to the Pit”, to their 2016 Grammy Award winning “Cirice.” The wall to wall fan filled space was shaking with energy! I’m super pumped to be able to see them in a headline setting, where we get all the hits and fans can enjoy some of the lesser known songs as well. They playfulness of Tobias with the crowd is exactly what headlining is all about and what fans love seeing. Getting the crowd into it by making them laugh and fun hand gestures. See them on tour!
Stay tuned to see what they have in store for the future, as they’re definitely sticking around in the genre as a staple.
