“Second Best,” the first track off of Figure It Out’s new EP, Silence Isn’t Golden, dares you to sit still. Spoiler alert, you can’t. It’s impossible. It’s not just catchy though. It plays off of an unfortunately familiar situation we’ve all been through: being second best to someone. With lyrics like “when you said I was the only one, but you lied to me,” you’d be quick to assume the songs is about defeat. Fear not! The song isn’t about being destroyed by this two-faced gremlin of a person, it’s about being stronger. It’s about knowing your worth more and not settling on being someone’s second best. This has quickly become my favorite track from the band so far.
Taking a look back, Figure It Out has been on the scene for a few years now, starting to gain momentum after the release of their 2014 EP, Where You Started From. They haven’t slowed down a bit, releasing new music every year and steadily garnering a following. The band grabbed my attention last summer with their killer, pop-punk cover of The Chainsmoker’s hit, “Closer.” They’ve had a place in my spin cycle ever since.
So, this new EP. The gang from Phoenix is keeping the momentum going and they aren’t letting up. That is, until you get to “Sleep Without You.” Starting out as an innocent acoustic letter of endearment, the track builds towards something more, and is the perfect bookend to the EP. I want to elaborate, but I’ll refrain. You should experience it yourself.
Silence Isn’t Golden drops September 1st!
