Edge of Paradise return with a killer five song album titled Alive out on ILS/Universal Records and this thing flat out rocks. Never heard of this Los Angeles band? Well, let me tell you about them. Formed in 2011 by guitarist Dave Bates and lead singer Margarita Monet, this four-piece has a very unique, almost haunting, sound. Monet’s vocals are one of the freshest female-fronted I have heard in a long time. They are not new to the scene, but are continuing to make waves in the rock world and this third release from them proves that. Nick Ericson and John Chominsky round out the band on bass and drums respectively.
The title song “Alive” starts off this disc and it’s a roller coaster ride with a crushing guitar by Bates and a pounding bass line by Ericson. Check out the video for this song if you haven’t already. “Humanoid” has a sound like a futuristic Missing Persons song which was a delightful surprise. No one sounds like them anymore and they were pioneers of the scene back in 1982. “Shade of Crazy” is a flat out heavy rocker with more heavy guitars from Bates and stellar vocals from Monet. The intensity in her voice is quite possibly unmatched for a female fronted band and that is saying a lot with some amazing female fronted bands out there. “Mystery,” my favorite on this EP, is a beautifully written track and the band just put out a video for the song which you can see on their webpage.
The album was on Billboard’s Top 100 New Album Artists list last month and after listening to this album a few times, deserve to be. You can download the album from Amazon and ITunes. I only expect more wonderful things to come from this band in the near future.
