In the family tree of metal Accept is categorized as power metal. In my opinion they should be in the new wave of heavy metal. Their early sound is very comparable to Judas Priest, Saxon and other bands in that category. Accept’s heavy and influential sound is unmistakably obvious in the new release by Udo Dirkschneider formerly the vocalist of Accept. Dirkschneider’s gone back and recorded a live album with all old Accept tracks called LIVE- Back To The Roots – ACCEPTED!
First off let me just say that Dirkschneider is 65 this year but doesn’t sound it at all. He has taken very good care of his voice and it shows on every track on LIVE -Back To The Roots – ACCEPTED! Some of the great tracks from the album are “Head Over Heals” from 1983s Balls to the Wall, “Restless and Wild” from 1982’s Restless and Wild and “Up to the Limit” from 1985’s Metal Heart. My favorite track on the album is “Midnight Highway” from the Breaker Album released in 1981.
The recording and mixing of this album is excellent. There is not too much crowd noise and no one instrument over powers another in the mix. As a bonus on the album Dirkschneider has recorded a cover of Sinatra’s “My Way.” It is not what you would expect after just hearing Dirkschneider screaming old Accept songs, but it really works nicely. It showcases the range of his voice and it a great rendition of a classic song.
After hearing these songs live I felt the need to re-listen and in some cases re-purchase some of the old Dirkschneider’s Accept albums that I had on vinyl and cassette. If you like old Accept you are going to love LIVE -Back To The Roots – ACCEPTED! If you have never heard Dirkschneider, pick this album up because you won’t be disappointed. I promise you will want to discover Dirkschneider era Accept.
LIVE -Back To The Roots – ACCEPTED! was recorded in December 2016, the in Brno (Czech Republic). The show was shot also and is available as DVD/2CD, BluRay/2CD and Gtf. Triple Vinyl in two different colors. Dirkschneider LIVE- Back To The Roots – ACCEPTED! will be released by AFM Records on August 25, 2017.
