This Swedish band has what it takes to make it in the music industry and stay in it. The powerful vocals both Pontus Hjelm and Christoffer Anderson provide are a staple needed to be a striking force in the metal-core genre. The band was formed in 2007 by former Nightrage vocalist Jimmie Strimell. After many years of success, it was announced in 2013 that Strimell had left the band and Anderson had taken over his role as vocalist. Since 2007, Dead by April has gone through plenty of lineup changes, and has had many successes along the way despite the shakeups. Worlds Collide, released on April 7, 2017 is a must listen.
Their current release, Worlds Collide is a serious display of what their current lineup is made of. Right off the bat, the first track “Crying Over You” starts with the amazing strength and clean vocals of Pontus Hjelm. The intensity quickly picks up pace with the wicked speed of drummer Marcus Rosell. This is such a masterpiece, if this record only had the one song, it’d still be great and it’d be on repeat for hours. “I Can’t Breathe” is another flawless piece of the puzzle, complete with a slow piano introduction, dropping the heavy riffs that rock your headphones off. I’m at a loss for words when it comes to an album that doesn’t have a song I want to skip. “Playing with Fire” is in the realm of the Parkway Drive and I Prevail style of heaviness. These songs have it all.
Do yourself a favor and pick this album up now. These are seasoned veterans with a strong lineup and extreme talent. The mixing of the pop lyrics with raw metal power is what separates this band from others in its respectable genre. Songs like “Breaking Point” and “Perfect the Way You Are” are prime examples. The album ends on such a high note, that the legendary guest vocalist, Tommy Körberg at almost 70 years old, stepped into the studio and recorded “For Every Step” in less than an hour. Swedish singer Körberg is known for his decades in music and work with ABBA and Eurovision Song Contest.
