Tree City Sessions is a unique collection. It’s a live session recording featuring many fan favorites, as well as a few newer songs from their most recent album. While it’s not as hard hitting as the studio version of the selected tracks, it’s exactly what the die hard DGD fans have been looking for.
As you may or may not know, they’ve gone through three vocalists now (Jonny Craig, Kurt Travis, and now Tilian Pearson) and while their style has mostly stayed the same, we’ve gotten a different sound with each one. Tree City Sessions features current (and my personal favorite) DGD vocalists Tilian, giving him the opportunity to put his own voice behind the fan favorites from the past 10 years. Featuring tracks from Downtown Battle Mountain & DBM II, Happiness, Death Star (hehe), and Acceptance Speech, it is a beautiful homage to what Dance Gavin Dance has been and will continue to be. While some of the tracks sound incredible live, others lack the luster the original tracks have, but the project still packs the extra punch DGD is known for.
Don’t be discouraged fellow fans; the band manages to make it seem like you’re hearing all of these songs for the first time again, with the exception of “And I Told Them I Invented Times New Roman” which somehow seems to be elevated by Tilian’s vocals instead of Jonny, a feat I never thought was possible. You can expect a live “death” of a beloved song series from the band, as well as some cleverly twisted lyrics brought on by the live setting (Just because, you move your lips, doesn’t mean shit.) All in all, this is a project for the fans, but it’s sure to catch the attention of a couple of new ones along the way.
Dance Gavin Dance in currently in the studio recording their follow up to 2015’s Instant Gratification, so if this isn’t your cup of tea, there’s not much more waiting to do! You can also catch Jonny Craig, Kurt Travis, and Tilian on their tour together now.
