When Jake E left Ameranthe his whereabouts became a mystery to all of us. I kind of had a sneaky hunch that he would pop up in some capacity at some point but not this soon. Well here we are about six months after his departure from Ameranthe and he has a new project with a new album. Jake E has joined forces with ex In Flames members Jesper Strömblad on guitar and Peter Iwers on Bass along with Alex Landenburg, current drummer of Luca Turilli’s Rhapsody. They form CyHra and Letters to Myself is their debut album.
The album has a similar sound to some of the heavier Ameranthe songs. Jake has taken a lot of the techno vibe out of the music and replaced it with a more straight-forward rock and roll sound that is much more organic than the techno sound that Ameranthe is known. That being said, there is still some keyboards in the album but it is not driven as much by the techno sound. Some great songs on the album include the opening track “Karma,” “Here to Save You” and my personal favorite “Letter to Myself.” This track has a heavy guitar driven sound and showcases Jake’s voice so eloquently.
When it comes down to if this album is for you I have to say In Flames fans may not like this sound. It is a bit softer than what you are used to and the vocals are softer than an In Flames fan would probably care to hear. If you liked Ameranthe and Jake’s work with that band then you will totally dig this album. It showcases Jake’s voice very well and is a bit heavier than Ameranthe, which is what compels me to like this album. As I said earlier if you are in search for a less techno driven sound with a great voice than I think that CyHra is the perfect fit for you. Letters to Myself will be released on October 20, 2017 via Spinefarm Records.
