Heavy and melody make the perfect pairing to create a metal-core masterpiece. Curses has released their full length album titled Chapter I: Introspect. The band formed in early 2014, in West Virginia, and has since covered a lot of ground in a short time. They’ve been on several tours including a slot in Vans Warped Tour. The band is made up of Brandon Castro and Eli Fry on vocals, Davey Nicewander on guitar, Michael Olivarez on bass and vocals, and Shane Cyrus on drums.
The first single, “Fortune Collapse,” was released with the help of Revolver Magazine. With sounds reminiscent of old Motionless in White or We Came as Romans, this song is a kick in the teeth before jumping into a beautiful melodic chorus featuring vocals from Spencer Sotelo. It’s insanely catchy, but in a good way and is the perfect choice for a single.
The band’s second single, “The Abandoned,” eludes to some darker subject matter. Referencing the loss of a father, but embracing the darkness and how it can make you what you are, turns it into something more positive. I really love the way this band can jump from a screaming verse to a singing chorus and make the flow seem effortless. After just a few listens, I already wanted to start singing along.
The album is rounded out by an additional eight songs, all packing the same punch as the first two singles and are well worth a listen. It’s been a while since I’ve heard a metalcore band this good. I definitely see these guys doing big things and I hope to catch a live show of theirs soon. I have a feeling it will be absolutely mental.
Go grab a copy of Chapter I: Introspect out now and catch these guys on tour in March.
