Clint Cunanan: Hey Kristi! How are you doing?
Shockwave: I’m doing great. How about you?
Well, it’s above -25 here, so I’m doing better than you are at the moment.
You mean you didn’t enjoy being in the frozen tundra?
That’s a perfect name for it, the frozen tundra. I can’t say I miss it, but we have fun up north. I just like being in this 80-degree weather instead.
(laughing) Well while you enjoy that nice weather you have, what are you most looking forward to about Shiprocked?
This will be my first time being on a cruise of any kind, so I have no idea what to expect. I thought about it and I’ve thought about, and racked my brain. It seems like a lot of people go on cruises and a lot of people go vacations but the thing about Shiprocked seems to the most enticing to me is the fact that I know probably 60% of the people that are going to be on this cruise. Probably even more than that. I am definitely looking forward to a couple days of hanging out with people that you don’t normally get to hang out with for long. The down side is some of these people are extremely weird (laughing)… but no, I’m super excited about it. Plus, we are direct support for one of my ultimate favorite bands ever in the world.
Which band is that?
I’ve read in an interview you did that your dream tour was with Breaking Benjamin.
I’m a huge Breaking Benjamin fan. I played their music at my mom’s funeral, they are one of two bands I have tattooed on me. I’m a pretty die-hard Breaking Benjamin fan. To be on Shiprocked with them, and to be playing the same stage with them, it’s absolutely a dream come true for me. There is a cool thing about Shiprocked. A lot of people don’t understand that some of the bands you see out on the road it’s ‘like, “How did this garbage band end up opening for this huge band here?” and the general public doesn’t realize that it’s money. It’s something that nobody talks about, it’s unfortunate because bands only make so much money. A lot of people says “Rock’s dead”, you know why Rock’s dead? Because nobody gets excited about shows anymore. People thrive on showing up for the band they are going to see and then leaving. That was one of the things I loved as a kid was going and seeing the opening bands. I love seeing opening bands. I remember stuff like Deftones and Sevendust touring together. Limp Bizkit with Godsmack. Etc. These were bands that you wanted to see together and they were all bringing something to the table. So many people now are just buying onto tours. Shiprocked has that prestige where I don’t think you can just buy onto it, so it’s still untainted if you will. That’s very exciting to be a part of that.
I’ve traveled multiple times to see different shows and bands. I love discovering new music and finding new bands. It’s just this whole give and take, you respect the bands and they’ll love you for it. Rock isn’t Dead if you take care of your people.
Clint: I agree 100% with that. We have a few people who have been to our shows 80 times and they have to travel a lot to come see us that many times. We have this cult like following… but I’ve traveled many hours to see bands myself, I’ve literally gotten off tour and driven 5 hours to see Breaking Benjamin. Same with A Day to Remember and traveled many many many miles to see them, they are another band I have tattooed on me by the way.
Describe Another Lost Year to those who are new to you.
People always ask me, “What kind of band are you in?” … I’m in a rock band. I don’t know what active rock is, I don’t know what mainstream rock is. I write what I write. Some people would say I write songs that are country, and if that makes me country then I’m country too. Music makes you feel something. It should. If it doesn’t then you aren’t listening to the right thing. We had two number ones and a blip in time. It’s such an up and down ride, that I don’t focus anymore on what we have accomplished or what we can accomplish. I truly only focus on the fact that whether or not these songs that I write will, 15-20 years from now, be regarded as one of the greats. So, when people ask me what kind of band we are, I say “We’re just in a rock band. Straight up feel good rock and roll.” We call it freedom rock but people think that’s because of military ties or something like that. I was in the military, but it has nothing to do with that. Freedom Rock can give you the freedom to do whatever you want. If you want to write a heavier song or a ballad, write the heavy song or the ballad. Everybody in the world has experienced love at some point. Even the worst of the worst criminals have experienced love at one point in their life and that’s something that we can all relate to. We have all experienced pain, we’ve all had hate. We’ve all gone through something. That’s what it should be about, finding that connection for everybody and making it work.
So Shiprockers are experiencing Another Lost Year’s fan base for the first time as well. Describe your fan base to us.
It’s a cult. It is the weirdest thing ever. Some people would consider me a cult leader. I am not. I don’t claim that. That’s not for me to say, that’s for others to say. I don’t know, man, it’s much like the Shiprocked family. The ALY family. They are called the “Alyn’s”, “Another Lost Year Nation” but that’s what they are. They are from another planet because they have been brain washed and they like our music.
What can Shiprockers expect from Another Lost Year while you’re on the cruise?
Well the show is going to be amazing for one, because the energy of everything. We get two different sets and two totally different shows. All of our songs are sing-a-long songs. If you listen to it, the first chorus, you’ll pick up it up real quick. Everybody loves to sing a long and we’re all about having a good time. We can party with you, sober, but we’ll party with you. We will have a great time. As far as when we’re not playing… I won’t say that we’re party-ers, because we don’t party and we aren’t big drinkers. But we will be “out-partying” everyone because we will be doing it sober. Just remember when everyone is hammered drunk and they are talking to us, we will be totally sober. So, we are going to mess with you.
Going back to how you mentioned it’s your first cruise. How many people in Another Lost Year have not been on a cruise or out of the country before?
We are all first timers.
Which one of you is mostly likely to get into the shenanigans on board then?
If I wasn’t going to be chaperoned, it would be me for sure. I will be chaperoned very much.
So, what you mean is you have a babysitter?
(laughing) That’s usually a dead giveaway on who is the trouble. You know what, I’ll probably still be the one to get into so many shenanigans.
Well, shenanigans can be anything from picking on a drunk person to straight up going ham on anything. There is just so many things that are going on, you don’t know your ass from your head when you’re drunk or sober. Especially when it’s 60% of the boat that you know, it’s not like it’s another show in another town that you’ve never been to before. It’s all these people that are like your family reunion. A family reunion that you want to be at.
There seems to be like this party that everybody goes to that nobody really talks about.
The Fight Club of Cruises?
(laughing) It’s like a secret society, man.
What event are you looking forward to most on Shiprocked? We have pool wars, deck wars. Is there anything that sticks out that you want to be at?
Well, I think we’re going to be at the deck wars… for reasons… that I don’t know how to talk about. (laughing) We’ve looked over so many events and this is just going to be chaos. So much chaos.
Controlled yet ridiculous chaos
(laughing) Controlled. What’s controlled about it? Controlled because it’s on a boat? That’s why they do it on a boat. So, you have this limited perimeter where people can actually not go past or they will die.
Either you stay on the boat or you jump into freezing cold waters. Your choice.
You’re gonna die.
Ok. So. Mini Golf or Water Slide?
If you would have asked me this last year, I would have said mini golf. Honestly from the moment since I’ve known about Shiprocked. I’ve been getting into shape, you know, 34 years of abuse on my body is hard to take off. I’ve been eating right and working out every day. So, I’m excited to be the guy that walks around with no shirt on the entire time. So, I’m going with water slide! I have the most ridiculous shorts too. They are the shortest of shorts that you have ever seen. People are going to be like, “This guy knows what’s up.”
Are they total tourist type of thing or cute little board shorts?
They’re about an inch of cloth away from being a speedo, probably. (laughing)
I’ll have to find you and take a picture of this.
Oh, don’t worry, don’t worry. I’ll be the obnoxious one. I’ll be one of the most obnoxious people on the boat, for sure.
Please photobomb everyone with these shorts on.
Which of you is most likely to hit the 24-hour pizza bar?
I’ve been training all year for this. You can pretty much guarantee that I’m going to eat everything on that boat.
What do you most want to take away from your experience on Shiprocked?
This is one of the things that the we talk about. We’re like “Oh my God, in a month we’re all going to be on a boat.” You know, it’s the networking. We’re playing with bands that we don’t normally get to play with. There’s nowhere you can really hide. Everybody will be around. That’s the coolest thing, and just having all of Shiprocked talk about us. We want to be a band that everyone is talking about, and hopefully that’ll carry over throughout the year and helps us gain the momentum to become one of the next top-tier bands. That’s ideally the launching pad of Shiprocked.
See, Shiprocked is this tight knit community. Except, the largest and tightest community of fans you’ll ever find. I hear from bands all over the place that there’s a huge group of Shiprockers at their concerts. You can definitely gain that momentum from Shiprockers talking up your band. Like, I never heard of Wilson until Shiprocked and they’ve become this pretty big band in my opinion. That’s a good goal to have, to get noticed by Shiprockers and get things moving for you.
Anything that you would like to plug through Shockwave?
I look forward to seeing everyone on Shiprocked. Bear with us, there is a ton of people. I know I’m extremely handsome, but yes, I am taken. (laughing) Nah, we’re going to have a good time. Check us out before the boat, we have the easiest and dumbest songs to remember and you don’t want to be the only person not singing along. And Kristi, thanks for taking the time out of your day to do this. I hope you stay warm!
Thank you very much for taking the time out of your day as well, I had the best time. We will see you on the boat!
