CKY are back and rising from the aftermath of their former hard-partying lifestyle with a brand-new LP, The Phoenix. Packed full of the groovy hard rock we’ve come to know and love from CKY, this new release is possibly the best we’ve heard from them so far. This is the band’s first release since Carver City in 2009 and singer Chad I Ginsburg had this to say in the recent PR release:
“We’re grown adults now with an eagle-eye perspective on who we are, what we do, and how to do it right. None of us are out there in the clouds. We’re pretty well-grounded people that have an honest perspective on where we’re at.”
The first single, “Replaceable,” has a fun and catchy rhythm to it. I was instantly drawn in and wanting more. In a press release Ginsburg stated, “Replaceable is a rockin’ track. Fucking solid. I would say it is generally about anyone that gets in your way, holds you back or slows your potential with their own blatant insecurity, fears or sickness.” I think that perfectly sums it up. Paired with the familiar groovy CKY sound we all know and love, it is a perfect first single off this fantastic LP.
A quick favorite of mine was “Head for a Breakdown.” With the funk and psychedelic synths that have made CKY so popular, this song has some darker undertones. The song brings on emotions of good versus evil, desperation, growth and knowledge that really show us a more mature CKY, while maintaining the classic sound.
The last song on the LP, “Better Than Get Even,” caught my attention for the playful party sound. Then, I really listened to the lyrics and fell in love. This album is packed with diverse stuff and this song embodies it. The dark lyrics with the playful sound are the perfect way to describe how aptly named The Phoenix is. CKY have certainly arose from the ashes and come back with some amazing stuff on this LP.
Due out on June 16, The Phoenix is something you need to get involved with. The guys have announced some dates on the Vans Warped Tour, their first time on the bill since 2000. Personally, I can’t wait to see them and hear these songs played live. Do yourself a favor and get back in touch with your CKY roots. This album will make your ears happy.
