Interview and Show Review by Aimee Iceman
I started off my night by heading to downtown Memphis to take in the Butcher Babies show. When you hear of a couple of chicks that are metal, you’re unfortunately thinking the stereotypical bullshit. How hard can they really rock? I mean, they’re chicks right?
I met with Carla and Heidi before their show and they graciously had me on their tour bus for the interview. I am greeted by Heidi’s vicious guard dog who weighs no more than ten pounds, but I truly believe that she would’ve lit my ass up if I had gotten too close to her Momma. Carla and Heidi instantly made me feel comfortable. Heidi assured me that her beautiful, little, tiny, Cudjo would calm down and sure enough, tiny Cudjo accepted me being there and curled up with her Momma. I sit back and take a long look at these metal heads. Jesus Christ……they are both gorgeous! Carla was sporting some bad ass purple and black dreads and was wearing a little black leather jacket and camo pants, and Heidi was wearing a t-shirt, hair pulled up, and was in her comfort zone.
This was the Babies second trip to Memphis and they were excited to be back in The Bluff City. The three of us discussed their latest album, Lilith. This album is their baby. They have received great feedback from fans and worked diligently over a year on this album to get it to the perfection it is today. I was interested in who they’d love to tour with. Slipnot was the first thing that came out of Heidi’s mouth. They are big fans of Slipknot. This led me to my next question of who they’d like to collaborate with and of course, I got the same answer! SLIPKNOT!! Can you imagine what the brainchild of Butcher Babies and Slipknot would be? Jesus Christ!! A whole lot of fucking awesome! I then asked what they would like to do and I have never been more excited by the answer I was given…… drum roll please……… they would like to combine metal and rap! SAY WHAT???? Oh my God! This was music to my rap/metal loving ears!!!! I will be anxiously awaiting until this drops!
We talked about their biggest obstacles with touring. Carla said that she has a big ole pit bull at home that she misses, as well as her gym and her coffee shop. Heidi surprised me by saying that she enjoys touring but it all made sense when she explained that she can bring her dog along because it’s small. We also chatted about the perils of touring and how it affects everyone. Heidi says the band is like family and in the beginning it was hard getting adjusted to everyone’s personalities, but now it’s pretty much a cake walk for them. She said that she and Carla are best friends first and band mates second. If there is an issue, they will sit down and hash it out so it doesn’t go any further. I was really interested in how they deal with their “metal screams” and if they had ever used a coach in order to show them how to protect their vocal cords and not lose their voices. Surprisingly, they told me no. I mean, have you heard these two bad asses scream? They said that they practice all of the time even when they are not on tour. It’s all about working your vocal cords. They also drink tea together before shows and that helps as well. My last question for them was what is in store for 2018. They told me that they are headed to Japan and are excited as hell for it. Heidi said they have some other things in the works but couldn’t disclose any more than that.
Not wanting to take up anymore of their time, I ended the interview and asked them if they minded if I took a pic of the two of them. Heidi asked if I wanted a selfie with them. Um, HELLS YEAH!!!! I left the tour bus with Carla, and one of my friends was waiting for me at the end of the bus to catch the show. Carla didn’t know she was with me and she stopped and asked my friend her name and introduced herself. How many people truly do that? That alone will always make me a fan of the Butcher Babies. You don’t find that shit often at all.
Carla and Heidi entered the stage after Demrick. Any doubts that anyone would have about them being chicks in metal were quickly squashed. I was fucking amazed. These bitches are BADASS!!!! They come out hot and stay hot!! I can truly say, I was taken aback by their performance. They are jumping off boxes, their necks are going a mile a minute with their long locks swinging and the back lights showing that shit in a way that was mesmerizing to the crowd. I was amazed at the energy in their performance! I was pissed off that I didn’t ask them for their FitBit stats.
Heidi got the crowd fired up when she screamed, “WE ARE HERE TO FUCK SHIT UP”. The crowd went wild! I am standing there, mouth opened, thinking I just talked to these chicks and they were so soft-spoken, sweet … and now BAM!!! It was amazing!!! You talk about stage presence! My GOD! Not only did they put on a bad ass show but they got the crowd involved which means a lot to those that have paid to come to the show. Heidi told the crowd in the front to step aside and step back. She was clearing it to get a mosh pit started. She then asked a guy, “You! In the white shirt! Are you gonna get this started?”….. And that, dear Shockwave Readers, is how the mosh pit started on November 29th, 2017 at The New Daisy Theater.
If you haven’t bought their newest album, Lilith, I’d highly suggest you do. You will not be disappointed. It’s full of riffs and some primal metal screams!! My favorite track is “POMONA (Shit Happens).” If you cannot use the word ‘fuck’ like you use the word ‘the’, this just isn’t your shit. “FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK SHIT SHIT SHIT SHIT SHIT!!!!!!” The riffs are amazing in this track and near the end the tempo slows down to lead you out of cardiac arrest! My second track on the album is “Lilith.”.This song will just suck you in with its catchy beat to bang your head to, the primal deep screaming, and then the shift back to vocal. Seriously, buy the album and if you claim to be a metal head, hit up their show because it’s one of the most bad ass performances you’ll ever fucking see! Team Butcher Babieeeeeeeeeeeeessssss (all in my metal scream)!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
