At long last, 30 years after it was shelved, Black Bambi released their long awaited self-titled album. The 80’s influence is felt from start finish and on every track. It’s an enjoyable trip back in time. Once L.A.’s most celebrated band, Black Bambi’s debut album got lost in and Atlantic Records shuffle. Says the band’s frontman, Steven Ray Anastos,
Basically, we were orphaned. John Carter, our A&R guy, good friend & mentor, parted ways with Atlantic Records right as we were completing the album. The timing could not have been worse. We were left high & dry and there was no coming back from that.
Thanks to 20th Century Music, who issued the release nearly 30 years later, there is finally a come back for these L.A. hard rockers.
The upbeat “Mary’s Birthday” kicks off the album with a party feel, and begs the question just who is Mary and where is her party? My guess would be Sunset Boulevard! “Down” begins eerily and takes many twists and turns. There is a lot going on here to keep you rocking out. The guitar bass has a unique groove that grabs the listener and refuses to let go. “The Celebration” finds the listener singing along thanks to strong lyrics and a solid hook.
Becoming self aware is always something to celebrate especially with great guitar licks. The energizing lyrics and guitar in “99 and a Half” gets you moving from the onset. There definitely is a grittiness here that takes over your state of being. Likewise, the hooks in “Lay Me Down” will stay with anyone after one listen. One can’t help being drawn back to this song, and the great lyrics make a repeat listen a must! “Soul of a Child” concludes this album with undeniable ’80’s influence, and summarizes this fun-filled adventure back in time. Black Bambi combines nostalgia and present day without missing a note.
