Canadian rock band Art of Dying started off their 40 plus date Nevermore tour right here in Maryland. Starting the evening off with “Some Things Never Change,” from of Rise Up, lead singer Jonny Hetherington looked ecstatic. Anyone would be on the first song of a brand new tour. After calming down a bit, they ripped into “Get Thru This” with pure energy. Guitarist Tavis Stanley, bassist Cale Gontier, and new drummer Cody Watkins all sounded great, especially considering first shows are notorious for feeling things out and getting used to playing again — but not this one. Immediately following “Best I Can,” Tavis and Jonny pulled out chairs and sat to performed Mr. Mister’s classic “Broken Wings” acoustically which was unexpected (I love when bands do that). They also performed ballad “Everything” as well. “Rise Up,” then brought the crowd back into this great show with authority. It may have been the best sounding song of the evening. They ended the evening with their hit “Die Trying” which is my favorite song by them. If you have the time to catch these guys out on tour, do so. You will not be disappointed.
