When I was a teenager I had never heard of Armored Saint, until one day when I was in my favorite record store called The Works in Eureka, CA. A young man working recommended an album called March of the Saint. I bought the album and the rest was history. I have been an Armored Saint fan since that day. Oh, the young man who recommended that album to me was Mike Patton (Mr. Bungle & Faith No More).
That takes us to today and the latest release from Armored Saint titled Carpe Noctum. Carpe Noctum is Latin for seize the night. This being a live album, the title is very fitting. The album was recorded during a 2015 headlining show in Aschaffenburg, Germany as well as the Wacken Festival.
Capturing that live feeling on an album can be hard. Armored Saint has pulled it off incredibly. Jon Bush’s live vocals sound raw and, yet, so refined. The man has the ability to sing like very few others. His voice is very energizing and it gives the album a glow that will convince that you are there with him singing along to all of the best Armored Saint classics including: “Win Hands Down,” “Reign of Fire,” “Left Hook from Right Field,” and my all-time favorite, “March of the Saint.” The mix of the album is great which can commonly be a problem with live albums. Most fans either love or hate live albums, but I can tell you this is one you will love. Armored Saint captures intensity perfectly.
Until it’s time for Armored Saint to release another studio album you must add this live record to your collection. You won’t be disappointed because Jon Bush and the boys from Armored Saint have created a live masterpiece.
