When asked to review Another Lost Year’s new album Alien Architect I was elated! This is their second full length studio album. Their debut album Better Days was released in 2012 with the single, “War On The Inside” putting them on the map. The band later produced two Extended Play (EP) studio recordings titled Revolution Part 1: The Other Side (2014) and Revolution Part 2: It’s a long way (2016).
Their first two singles off Alien Architect, “Wolves” and “We All Die Alone” have already been released to radio with full length videos as well. They accomplished all this while touring and enjoying the other things life has to offer.
From the moment the first track “Intro” starts, you get a strong sense where this album is going. The 1:07 dialogue might sound familiar, “What makes America the greatest country in the world” is from the HBO series “The Newsroom.” Slowly over the speech you hear the drums, guitars, and music rise, with a distorted but solid “Wake up!” Almost as if to say “America, it’s time to open your eyes!” It jumps right into their first single off the CD, “Wolves.” With strong vocals Clinton Cunanan is telling us “Wake up, I’m giving you one last chance to run like hell.” There is a strong theme throughout the first four tracks “Intro,” “Wolves,” “Bastard Sons,” and “Trigger Finger.” Perhaps focusing on what has happened to America?
“He Took Beautiful Away” and “Memories” are the songs that I am automatically drawn to. They shy away from what I perceive as political messages and touch more on the personal side of life. With melodic guitar and heartfelt lyrics, the words will speak to anyone that has ever been heartbroken. On the upbeat side “Run the Tank Out” is a fun, windows-and-top-down-in-the-car, singing-and-letting-everyone-hear-it kind of tune that puts a smile on my face every time I hear it. The lyrics remind me of a provocative time in life, looking back and wanting to do it all over again.
Owning their first CD, my biggest curiosity was, has Another Lost Year evolved, and have they found and perfected their unique sound? I believe they have. I always considered them to be a rock band with a little southern twist. After all, they hail from Charlotte, NC. Another Lost Year sticks to their roots with hard hitting songs that deliver strong statements. Their structure and song writing ability are consistent, and this album is no exception. Alien Architect is a well-rounded, pure, in your face American rock and roll album. The guitars, bass, drums and vocals encompass all that is rock and roll and should put Another Lost Year on your radar.
They are actively touring throughout the United States with dates through the end of 2016, and in January 2017 are scheduled to play the ultimate festival on the high seas, Shiprocked from the 16th to the 20th.
