The world of power metal reaches far and can be very diverse. One part of the genre that has been fairly successful is female operatic fronted bands. Groups like Epica, Within Temptation and Xandria have seen much success combining the beauty of an operatic voice with strong and thick guitar. Angel Nation was formed in London in 2011 by Finnish singer Elina Siirala and employs much of the same style as the above-mentioned bands. Angel Nation released an EP in 2012 and in 2014 released the album Tears of Lust.
In October 2017 Angel Nation will release their second album Aeon. They have found a way to combine the beauty of an operatic voice with a melodic metal sound. The opening track “Burn the Witch” is a great example of beauty combined with bronze. It uses symphonic instruments and incorporates them into a modern metal sound. Things don’t slow down as the album blazes into “Blood is on Your Hands.” One of my favorite tracks on the album is probably one of the softest but has the most amazing orchestration and vocal performance by Siirala. “Music Plays” is not a metal track at all but the vocal performance is breath taking. It is a song that could be right out of a modern-day opera with its violin and drums. The album is full of a perfect-pitched voice combined with classic power metal guitar.
Aeon is an album that is very technical both vocally and musically. Some may be turned off by its complexity. I found Aeon to be very enjoyable, and hearing an album that combined elements of a very structured style of music and meld it into a rock album was rather refreshing. If you enjoy female fronted metal bands I think you will enjoy Angel Nation and Aeon. If you like a more technical style of metal you will enjoy this album too. If you really want to hear a beautiful voice combined with great orchestration stop reading this review and go pick up Aeon by Angel Nation October 27, 2017 via Inner Wound Recordings.
