Stopping in Baltimore on their current tour to support their new eighth studio album Madness, Phil Labonte and crew played to a packed house and once again showed why All That Remains is still one of the most entertaining live acts out there. Labonte and longtime guitarist Oli Herbert know exactly how to work a crowd with each and every song they perform. First up though were newcomers Through Fire, and they put on a great show before the headliners took the stage.
Born from the ashes of Emphatic, who I once saw and were great in their own right, Through Fire is the brainchild of songwriter and guitarist Justin McCain. The band put out their debut album Breathe in 2016 and have been tearing it up playing their live show to the crowds since. Breathe is a good listen and their live show was just as powerful. “Dead Inside,” “Breathe,” “Reborn,” and their new single “Stronger” were the highlights of this quick but enjoyable live show. Look for them on tour all summer, and be sure to check them out.
All That Remains then took the stage starting off with “Madness,” the title song off of their new album. Labonte, an ex-marine, is a very mobile front man, jumping around like he was in his twenties, which you don’t see a lot of anymore at concerts. This show was pretty much a greatest hits package instead of a new album tour as hit after hit kept coming including “Stand Up,” “Six,” “Hold On,” and “What If I Was Nothing.” Herbert is as meticulous a guitar player as they come. He and Labonte feed off each other like no other. One new song they played was “The Thunder Rolls,” a Garth Brooks cover, and they did it acoustically at that. You don’t see metalcore bands doing country covers, but it works with these guys and the crowd loved it. “This Calling” and “Two Weeks” were the last songs of the evening that concluded their show.
All in all, All That Remains puts out a punishing live show and I always look forward to seeing them play. They will be touring the rest of the summer as well so go out and try to catch them in a town near you.
