We get solicitations from dozens of artists weekly for CD reviews of their music and while we would love to do them all, we just can’t. Too much music, so little time, but occasionally we will pick a lucky few. A guitarist named Adrian Weiss got my attention when he emailed us and I just happened to take a quick listen to his music at that moment. Talk about good.
The album, an instrumental titled Criminal Record, is Weiss’ third solo release to date. He is joined by his longtime friends Lars Zehner on drums and Marcel Willnat on bass. Oh wait. You may know who Adrian is. He currently is the guitarist for the German power metal band Gloryful, which has been around since 2010 and have three releases of their own. Think Hammerfall for a comparison. Criminal Record on the other hand, is nothing like Gloryful. Precise guitar playing is all I heard and I loved it. I was trying to compare him to someone after listening to this release, but I couldn’t, which is what I hoped I’d hear. Original music is where it’s at and this disc has plenty of it. “Beguiled (The Fanboy)” was the first song to get my attention. The bass picking part compliments the crunchiness of the guitar. “Completely Cut Loose” is exactly that; Weiss just showing off and jamming. You will love it. “Bassment Laughter” is one of my favorites on this disc. Now this song did remind me of Joe Satriani a little with the solos on it.
All in all, I would recommend this disc to anyone who is looking for a new instrumental disc to listen to, and now Adrian has one more fan over here in the States.
