Back in the year 2000, two friends and I went to Tampa, Fl to celebrate the Baltimore Ravens in the Super Bowl. The night before there was a huge festival and the streets were packed with people. We eventually came upon a stage set up and decided to stay to see who was playing. It was a brand new band who just put out an album called The Better Life. That band was 3 Doors Down and that night I became a fan. Fast forward to September 9, 2016 and the Ravens were having a Kickoff Special Festival with family activities, food, beer, and a concert featuring 3 Doors Down, and Shockwave Magazine was there.
The first band up was Baltimore’s hometown boys The Charm City Devils. If you don’t know who they are, look them up. Two members, lead singer John Allen and guitarist Nick Kay, used to play in Child’s Play, another local favorite, who played the Baltimore/DC scene in the late eighties/early 90’s. After they finished their rocking set, it was time for 3 Doors Down. If you have never seen them, they are one of those bands who sound just like their recordings. Lead singer Brad Arnold, the only original member left, still has great pipes and it was pretty evident as the night went on. I had actually forgotten how many hits this band has had until I heard them. “When I’m Gone”, “Let Me Go”,”It’s Not My Time,” they kept coming and coming. Their latest release, Us and the Night, was well represented also. Of course, everyone there kept screaming one thing over and over on what they wanted to hear. Sure enough, the guitar chords for “Kryptonite” started and the packed Ravens crowd went nuts. One of their encore songs, “Loser,” was exclusively live on the Shockwave Facebook page and if you didn’t get a chance to see it, go and check it out along with the first two songs of the set. 3DD is still out on tour with Pop Evil so if you get a chance to check them out, do it.
