I grew up in what some would consider a “strict” home, with little exposure to the rock music of those days (let’s say late 90’s to early 2000’s). Somehow, I stumbled upon 12 Stones amidst the barren sea that was the alternative (Christian) scene and I found something surprising there: hope.
They were a breath of fresh air. Here was a band that (in my opinion) challenged what it meant to be a Christian rock band, blending a harder sound than most others, with lyrics that left one feeling inspired.
15 years and four albums later, 12 Stones returns with Picture Perfect, and I feel like that marveled teenager all over again. After a five-year break, the band is back at it with such an energy, I question they were even gone in the first place.
Picture Perfect brings up issues that some would never admit they struggle with in the first place. Pride, loneliness, self-worth; these are things we all deal with, sometimes on a daily basis and it’s refreshing to hear a rock band address everyday life, without being in your face about faith, eternity, or salvation.
“Uplifting rock and roll” isn’t a statement one hears often (if at all) these days. Well, I’m here to say, our boys from Louisiana are here to remind you: you’re worth it. Those things that have an unwanted place in your life, the stuff that makes you think you’re “less than”?, I challenge you to hold on to them while listening through this album.
12 Stones isn’t here to be your savior, your fix-all, or even your shoulder to cry on. They are here to rock. They’re here to say, you aren’t alone. To say you have the strength.
For me, they brought back that surprise from so many years ago: hope.
Picture Perfect is out July 14th, 2017.
